Those guys steered you right on that range changer lever.
My Kubota mech showed me how cheesy that mechanism in to change ranges. He also showed how much work ($$) it was to repair what he claimed was his most often repair on the B tractors.

Like they say, just feather that HST pedal and she'll drop right in. NEVER force it. $$$

I always use my clutch when changing gear range, and when engaging or disengaging the PTO.

Second what bigdad says. Just nudge or tap the hydro pedal. You need to line up the gear teeth and there is no better, quicker way then the hydro pedal. You can always step on the clutch to help release some tension in the drive train. If you want a sure way to always switch from L to M or M to L or L to H etc, here is a way it always worked for me. When getting ready to change ranges, drive the tractor, step on the brake hard, keeping your foot on the brake while stopped, slide the range lever. Basically, you have taken the tension out of the drive train and you are allowing the play that is there to align the gear teeth. Its one of the few times I use the brakes with a hydro.

I'd say 80% of the time, if I'm not moving and on level ground I can EASILY change ranges without clutching. You have read by now that aligning the tranny meshing can be done by jogging the machine forward (or backward) in minute movements using the forward or reverse pedals.

ALWAYS use your clutch (if you have one) when disengaging or engaging your PTOs though.
