gearbox issues jd2040

Hello everyone I have a problem with the gearbox of my jd 2040 in second range 5th and 7th gear the just keep going kicked out underload anyone had the same problem yet

No experience with that tractor, but I had a '49 chevvy that repeadedly kicked out of high gear at highway speeds. It was caused by a worn bearing on the input shaft. a replacement tranny from a scrapyard did the same thing, for the same reason. Might be a bad bearing in your tractor tranny, or a worn shifter fork, Spiral cut synchromesh-type gears are more prone to kick out, too, if they are a bit worn or the shaft is loose in the bearing. Most tractors use square cut gears, however. They are called "dog" gears and cannot be shifted unless the tractor is stopped.
Hence the name "crashbox" tranny.

There are spring loaded balls and detents on the shift shafts. Maybe the springs/balls are rusted/gummed up not keeping the shaft in position.

Do you guess that I should split in half the tractor or I can something just remove the top lid of the gearbox?

I think I'd suggest to remove rockshaft housing(3 pt) and inspect gears and shifter rail detents.

TxJim beat me to the reply. I agree, pull the rockshaft housing, no need to split at this point.
