Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
I'm thinking that one of these 3-shank rippers would be suitable for primary tillage using my 43-hp MF-135 diesel tractor. I have 7 acres of weeds that I want to plant some type of cover crop on.

Anyone out there have experience with this implement or something like it? How deep and what speed?

Patches of clay, loam and gravely loam. Won't till until the rainy season starts in Nov. Soil is like a brick now.

I use the HD single gearmore riper. with great results, in heavy clay. water penetration in the garden is great now. 32 HP Kubota

The ripper will be great for rough preparation. It will certainly loosen compacted soil. You will still have to disc or till before planting. A 3 ripper for your tractor may only go 6-8" deep. I have a single ripper for my Jd 5300 and it can only go about 12" at most in hard soil. We have a 6 ripper for our big 185 hp tractor and it can still struggle with hard soil and stop the tractor.
