Geese...

How do you get rid of geese??? They make such a big mess with their...uh...droppings. HOLD ON...before you say "just shoot them" I'm in an area if you did that the SWAT team willed be called out, so that is out of the question. :confused2: We tried: a big orange ball (named "Terror Eyes" :laughing. They loved it... We then tried fake dead geese. They worked pretty good except they were stolen. Our neighbor got a fake fox, but after a while they found out it was fake so the geese were attracted to it. :laughing: We even tried using a body alarm...Now, I'm chasing them with the tractor (used to use my bike). The go away, but then come back after a while. They do not come every year so I hope they aren't here next year. We also think they might be attracked to our apple trees...So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of them???

By the way: my grandfather calls them "flying cattle". :laughing::laughing::laughing:

I used load noises, let the dogs chase them, etc... biggest thing is you can't let your guard down.

Canada geese are very good to eat and relativly easy to clean. Pick easily. I love to smoke them, but are also very good baked. I suppose trapping and eating them is out of the question. My Dad had a couple ingenuous method to catch geese. He came through the depression and was grateful for all he could catch. His methods still worked long after the depression was over and are politically incorrect now, but here goes. He used trotlines baited with corn. Also used steel leg traps, but wrapped the jaws with rags or other soft material to keep from breaking legs and escaping. Either of these methods will cause the geese to raise a ruckus and probably bring some type of law enforcement on you. Dad didn't have this problem as it was 7 miles to the nearest gravel road.

Funny story about the geese frequenting the park near my home. Ladies were complaining about the geese using the shade of a picnic pavilion and pooing all over the cement slab. For appeasment to the ladies it was decided to put up a fence around the pavilion. Well the geese just flew over the fence landed on the tables. You know what the geese did to the tables. The fence came down. A hydrant and hose was installed.

I love to watch geese, especially when they are on someone else's pond!

My labs get really worked up when I tell them there are geese in the yard. They will race out of the house to scurry the geese back into the pond. I can't even call it harrassment because the geese simply get slightly annoyed and are soon back on the grass, until the dogs head back outside again.

Fortunately, most of the time the geese are only here for a couple of days, and then move on. But boy, can they make a mess of your yard!

I love the breast meat rolled in flour and lots of black pepper and fried to golden brown. Get some!

Dogs keep our land geese free, only sometimes takes it a while to get them off the pond.

In crop country some folks use a propane cannon. They may also get government subsidies for destroyed crop. Note: this could very area specific.

For an upside think of all The free Guano being deposited!

The palate will discern a variety of flavors when eating geese. It all depends on how old, what they have been feeding on and long since they have molted.

In my younger days Dad's farm lay between two Alkali lakes and was on a migratory flyway. He did like hunting so I've had the privilege of cleaning and eating many a duck or goose.:thumbsup:

Yes, tastes a lot like duck. Don't make the mistake of thinking the white geese (we call um snow geese in KS.) are as good. They are hard to clean and most times are skinny. A lot of people are making jerky out of them now and just fillet the breast. I have heard the snows described as "flying liver".

SIMK used to have a problem with them around a pond. I hear tell he used a crossbow and a 22 rifle (depending on circumstances), and then just split them in front, removed the breast in two pieces, and smoked them. I hear they were quite good. I also heard that splitting them and removing just the breast took a matter of a few minutes.....quite simple and quick. As I recall he would slice it down after smoking and it seemed important to slice properly (across the grain) or it was tough. I also seem to recall he would shoot them in the neck or head, as a 22 to the body was almost never fatal and often didn't even penetrate. Just some stuff I heard, as best I recall it......

As far as chronically keeping them away....dog is the answer.

They have been using coyote silhouettes here in some of the parks and golf courses but it seems you need to move them daily or almost daily or the geese get used to them. Nothing like going to a park and finding wall-to-wall geese poop. :thumbdown:

Swans are also supposed to keep them away.

I would agree that a dog is the best, the geese will find another place to feed.

We do have two dogs, but they cannot run free, and it is a pain to take them out on a leash.

Kind of in the same situation, got a lot of geese in our yards and they make such a mess. Too close to town to shoot them and don't have a dog.
I was getting tired (literally) of trying to chase them out of the yard so I bought a RC truck and now I can chase them out and not even break a sweat!

I wish I had that problem:licking: I put a crab pot next to the pond with a little dog food in it and the ducks go in and can't find their way out til I come lift the lid and wring their poor little necks. Works for ptarmigan too and all the smaller birds coming and going seems to attract them. Don't see why you couldn't make a larger version for the geese.:2cents:

Swans are very good at keeping geese away. They are politicaly correct, too. Mine stay waterborne 100% of the time.

Duck & goose hunters are notorious for shooting swans because of their degoosing characteristics, so decide amongst yourselves what everyone else want's too.

I've had excellent luck using fish heads to deter deer from browsing on my little trees. Seems coyotes LOVE fish. They come around looking, urinate. Deer stay away. Only thing is a family of coyotes now live on the farm, all five of them. They don't cause any trouble and all of the windfall apples in the orchard have been picked up.
