I bought a 10k stand by generator, the guardian series by generac...We are having different talks about where it can be installed...We placed it 5ft. on the sides where any windows are,,,18" or alittle more away from the house...now the question is,,.where we placed it 18" from the house to the back of the unit on the house is a outdoor faucet and a 1ft.x3ft. basement window and a oil tank vent...can the generator go there??? 1 person said yes because the window in the basement is stationary and doesn't open and the vent will not bother the generator...what do you think?? I would really like a correct answer

I have the same generator, propane fed, which works great. Had about a year and a half now, very reliable and powerful.

I don't have a "code" answer for you. The window should be a non-issue if it doesn't open. The oil vent is one-way, right?

I think this is usually covered in building codes- at least here in CA, generator placement has pretty specific guidelines. The Generac enclosure is very well-ventilated but you don't want to contend with lethal CO exhaust, and they are kinda big to move if you decide to sell the house with it.

If you bought the generator new and locally (rather then an internet purchase), I suggest you contact the seller's business.
They may best advise you of how to locate it..after all, they want live customers who can provide good word of mouth.
Another possibility is asking the electrician who you hire to install the transfer switch...make sure you hire one with some experience.

If it was me, I'd want the generator a distance away from the house(in or near an outbuilding?), if at all possible.

Check your local code office or gas supplier/installer.. We install many of these a year and we find that in the northern part of the state they want one thing and in the southern part they want something else.. As for the cellar window you are OK the only question would be the oil tank vent..
