Chipper General Chipper Question (green or dry?)

/ General Chipper Question (green or dry?) #11
I chip all my trees in the spring - its cooler then. This spring it took me three days at 4.5 to 5 hours of steady chipping each day with my BX62. The trees - 6" and smaller Ponderosa pine - had been cut and stacked the previous spring. I didn't experience a single plug up during that 13-15 hours of chipping. I have found that the bigger chipper plus the larger tractor probably helps a lot. Specifically, I think its the larger output chute diameter and greater discharge wind velocity.

I think you are right. My Jimna has extra holes drilled in the knife access plate by the previous owner and I may add some more. It's a 60 horse maximum chipper I'm running on 90 pto ponies so I don't run it at 540, actually my tractor makes maximum torque below that. Chomping an 8" ash log yields a solid sttream of chips coming out the business end.

I had to raise the chipper 7" just to get the pto shaft to line up so I added (copied) the Woodmax ski arrangement too. I like good ideas.

I also copied the Woodmax over-the-chute roller lift and added their adjustable springs. The Jinma side lift handle is a PITA and I hung an old rubber truck mudflap in the chute so chunks don't come back out. It;s a helluva chipper btw.

generally speaking green wood is easier on the machine and operator to chip. If you have lots of leafy material say cotton wood or western red cedar, you gotta slow down some, but green wood goes much better. If it starts clogging, slooooowwww down
