General Question On Shear Pin

My King Kutter Brush Hog uses a grade 2 bolt for a shear pin. When replacing a sheared bolt I have been tightening the nut, in effect putting the bolt in tension. Does putting a bolt in tension affect its shear capability? Would I be better not bottoming the Nylok nut, leaving a small amount of axial movement?

If you permit any slop at all, you risk wallowing out the four holes through which the shear bolt passes. This happens also, when folks use a shear bolt of an incorrect diameter - the round holes become egg shaped. Once the elongation damage begins, it expands at a logarithmic rate - eventually resulting in snapped shear bolts every time you turn around.

Snug your NyLok nut right up flush. No extra torque needed, but don't permit any movement of the bolt in the holes.

Nor do you need to, but you should have 1½-2 threads showing.
