Generator Diesel Fuel Consumption and Rules of Thumb with questions.

What do you plan to power?

My office is setup so that I can run it EASILY off my EU2000 (can run my fridge too), and I`ll be at about 1/4 load which according to the manual is 14 hours on1 gallon :laughing: I`m happy with anything 7+hrs on 1 gallon.

The reason the question, sometimes it's cheaper to power 1 section of your house or shop than plan for the whole thing. Or have 2 generators 1 for lights, tv, fridge, misc, and 1 for the big-stuff. We have another generator that I use for misc that is a good size larger, and primary usage is for backup well power. :thumbsup:

My son has a 6kw yanmar clone that uses 9 gal. per 24hrs, about .37 gph, haven't had an outage since I got mine, has been a good investment so far.

1.2mw = 1,200,000watts.. Kinda big for a home setup Ooo!!! and about 150 gal per hour

I was doing the research for work to see if it was a paying proposition to participate in the demand response program for the Eastern US Grid operator PJM. I had to figure how much it would cost us to run these larger generators and how much the load would be if they called for a shut down. With the cost of diesel fuel I didn't want to get into a program that cost the company money.
The generator that I use at home is a Chinese 6.5 KW Yanmar clone. It does what I need it to da at the house. I went for 20 years 0n a 4KW gas unit and bought the diesel unit after we had an outage this past Christmas. The 20 year old coleman powermate only has a 1 gallon gas tank and it run me to death fueling it up. I went through 70 gallons of gasoline.

You have to consider what you want to power up, as well. Computers, TVs, etc don't like the type of power put out by a typical back-up generator. Something to do with the shape of the sine wave, I think.

Inverter type generators produce "clean power", or so I've been told, more suitable for electronics.

I did a trial run with the new china clone yanmar and put a power quality meter on it and load tested it too.. It did surprisingly well and I had no issues with the electronics. The sine wave wasn't perfect put with a gen set I didnt expect it to be.. I had problems with the microwave of all things with the older coleman powermate.

What kind did you order?

I believe it is an ETQ that I got off Ebay, $899 and free shipping, the last time I looked they had gone up.

I ordered an Aurora diesel and it has a 13 HP Yanmar clone and its rated for 6.5KW it is not a quiet unit with the full metal enclosure though. They were about $400 more.
