Some may think I'm a little nuts but I added a set of lights to my generator.
I was tired trying to find a flashlight to go out in the dark with no electricity to start the generator. Doesn't happen often but once is enough. Found some 13" strip lights on Amazon for $11. Each have their own switch. They work great. You can see exactly what you want to do. Kinda surprised the new generators don't offer this. Of course you need a 12v battery. Some pictures. These were taken at nite in the garage..

You may have better luck, but I found the cheap Chineseum strip LEDs from JeffCo to be of less than reasonable quality. Nearly every one I got failed within a few months of casual use. The ones at local auto parts stores are far more reliable.

I added a power out circuit with an 110VAC relay. Power goes out, DC lights come on so I can see the generator panel.

Great idea but still need flashlight to get from house to where generator is stored.....

Strap on head lamp works... Ever free ones from horror fright....

I simply park it in exact same spot after use so I always now where it is....

I had installed a 12 Volt Flouresent light in the ceiling of the garage, connected the 12 volts of an alarm panel gell cell, and the switch was a clockwork timer, in case I forgot to switch it off, as well as a flashing green locator led. I did this when I had to fart around connecting a PTO set, and it beat flashlights all to heck.

Such little preperations are nice in an emergency.

I ran LV wiring and LED lights in most of the rooms in the house connected to a 35AH battery on the load side of that relay. There's a 12V float charger that keeps the battery up. On initial testing, I found they would stay on most of three days.

If I ever built a house, I would most certainly incorporate an emergency lighting system. Being in the dark is no fun. Having a whole house/property generator is great so you can walk into any room and have light, but you shut the generator down and you are back in the dark again.

I do not think your crazy. A solar generator light will be high on my list after i build a shelter for it.

I put a solar powered motion light over my whole house standby generator.....only after messing around with a dead battery and blown fuse at 1am. Works great.
