Any one use their welder generator for a home generator back up? Is it practical? I have a lead on a 300amp 10,000 watt generator welder, 2 cyl. diesel. It needs some work but I don't think much. I don't need the welder as I have two welders. I would use it as a back up generator when the power goes out. To get a 10kw gas generator would be a lot more than what I can buy this for ($500) plus one that size would use a lot of fuel. The brand name is "Air Products". Cant find any information on them

I have used a Lincon Ranger 8 for fifteen years, slick as a bean ! If we only lost power a little more often I would get a Lincoln Vantage 300 with the diesel Kubota but even I have a hard time justifying that

Air Products is probably a Miller machine.
You go to Millerwelds.com and do some legwork you probably find the machine.

The problem with generators is fuel consumption now. When fuel was cheap bigger was better.
I have a 5.6kw that I use for power outages. It uses 1/2 gal and hour with a 11hp Honda.
6-8 years ago after a close call from a hurricane I had to use it for 12 days!!! With today's fuel prices it will cost me close to $50. a day to run so I will need to cycle it or pay.

with some exception.. fuel consumption on a generator will be mostly based on electrical load.

a 4000w genny powering a 1kw load and a 6500w genny powering a 1kw load are gonna run around the same fuel costs.

I have a 12.5kw pto genny... I don't burn any more diesel running it on my 3000 or my 4600 or my 5000 fords per given unit time, doing a set chore.. like pumoing the well up at my farm when there is no power. difference in engine size i'm using is 175ci, vs 201ci, vs 256ci. that genny at full tilt wouldn't even use all the hp from the 175ci ford 3000.. and running a well..it was probably oly hitting 1/3 'running' capacity on the genny..

to the op.. your call.. 500$ is cheap.. but depends on what it needs to run.

we have a hobart 10k welder / genny that poweres up the office when power is out.

I had a Miller welder with a 8KW gen at my a shop a few years ago with a Onan engine and it ran at 3600 RPM and it sure drank the fuel if run very long. Sold it. For the house I have a 700KW DeWault and during the 12 days power outage a couple years ago it would burn $30 worth of gas using it part time. Luckely when the storm hit I had about 30 gal on hand because you couldn't get any fuel for four days. After that I ran onto a Kubota light tower with a 6KW gen. It just sipped fuel but the gen wasn't quite big enough to run my well pump. Sold it and ran on to a Ingersoll light tower with a 8.5 kw, but haven't really had a storm to test it out. Ran on to this 300amp 10,000 kw gen welder for $500 and thought it might my AC too during a storm. It is a older unit with a engine problem, but I find out that it may be a old Yamhar or Subru 2 cyl engine and don't know about parts for them.

I use a Miller Bobcat 250NT when I lose power to the house. It's rated for 10KW and has a 20HP engine. It will run the entire house and garage. To me it's very practical since I use it for welding and it's there when I need backup power. It's not like a dedicated generator that starts automatically so it requires you to make the connections to the house and disconnection of street power. The price is great for the diesel generator if it doesn't need a lot.
