Generic diesel problem/question?

Does your excavator have a compression release, and a Thermostart intake manifold heater that works?

The farm tractors that were originally designed for running half submerged in rice paddies have a compression release. I've always thought that was to purge water out of the cylinders in case of a deep water mishap.:)

On those it saves the battery to spin it with compression released, then let the inertia of the spinning flywheel assist the starter after you let go of the release. Hopefully you can do likewise.

Also for your hard to start engine the Thermostart will likely help. Even better, warm the head with a hair dryer for a half hour. Make it think this is a warm restart.

That fuel filter is by far the nastiest one I've ever seen!

With the replacement/removal of fuel and filters, did you do a fuel bleed all the way to the injectors? If not when your battery is charged. Repeat all of your fuel bleed process including cracking open injectors. Any air in the fuel lines can and will give you dickens on starting.

Actually with your fuel filters in that condition,
I'd take the line off at the pump and flush it out and hope that none of that crap got into the pump.
Because if it did, it's time for a new pump.

Update #2

Well, sitting overnight didn't do the trick.

Decided to crack the lines at the injectors and make sure there was no air.

#1 Cylinder has fuel pumping to it
#2 No fuel
#3 Fuel

After much cranking it will start and run. It slowly builds up speed as 1 or 2 of the cylinders fire and eventually will start and run on it's own reaching a high rpm if the throttle is left in the high position.

I then decided to loosen the fuel lines while running.

#1 Fuel leaked at a pretty good rate no change in engine rpm
#2 No fuel
#3 Fuel sprayed at high pressure and engine immediately lost rpms

For grins I loosened #2 back at the injector pump (I guess that is what it is) and no fuel there either ... or at least very little like a couple of drops.

This appears to be a 3TN84L-RBS engine if that helps.

So looks like it may be running on just 1 cylinder?
I added more Diesel Kleen to the second filter and cranked the engine a bit to try and get a good concentration into the injector pump and plan to let it sit overnight in hopes it will degum whatever is in there.

All suggestions welcome! :)

This is a closeup pic of the injector pump (or whatever it should be called). 20200804_155403.jpg

I would guess your a couple of your injector plungers are stuck from the long sit. Have you tried tapping around on the injector pump a little while it is running? Not with a sledge hammer! :D

Are the fuel lines closed or collapsed/deteriorated?

A stuck plunger in your injector pump would not be a surprise. Make sure the ‘cleaner’ you ate using has a good diesel lucubration included in its additive package. As Winston says tap lightly on the pump. A rubber mallet is a good choice if not accustomed tapping on pumps.
It may be worth wild to pull #1 line from the pump to the injector to see if any debris may be in it.
#2 I suspect is the stuck plunger. The cleaner/lube and light tapping are the route to go. Unless you have the knowledge to work on those pumps, my advice is take it to an injection shop or try to hook up with ‘tgepumpguy’ on these forums and send to him.
#3 appears to be the cylinder that is firing as it should. With #1 being almost there but not quite from your description.
Good Luck!

not sure if this is helpful to you but i have what looks like a very similar engine in my FX24D tractor. The injector pump looks similar too. Im in the middle of a engine tear down but i was troubleshooting my injectors too and ended up flipping the injector lines 180 and fired up the tractor to see how the injectors were spraying in this post:

After you resolve your fuel pump issue you probably want to clean out your injectors as well?

Update #3

SUCCESS!! Thanks to all!

So y'all were correct about the stuck plunger/s. I watched this video Yanmar 4jHE fuel injection pump cleaning - YouTube and it didn't really look to hard to take the top piece apart to attempt to clean things up...and since it wasn't working anyways I gave it a shot.

Despite the warnings of the last commentor on the video I took it apart and cleaned as best I could. In particular I had to "tap" plunger #2 to get it free (it definitely would not have come free tapping on the side of the IP). I was careful to reassemble and get the correct number of turns etc... (although I don't know if that matters) for the pieces and once I had bled the lines it fired right up! Actually, it fired up while I was bleeding the lines LOL.

Throttle seems to work like normal and it has all the power it ever did as best I can tell.

Again thanks to all for helping me get this running again!
