Greetings everyone, I have been stalking around here for awhile and figured I needed to go on and sign-up. As everyone here I have a story and need some advice and this forum seems to shell out some good stuff. So here goes...

Just bought 3 acres. Its all pasture grass. Good pasture grass matter of fact. I will have about two acres of pasture grass and about 1 acre of bermuda sod once the house is built.

In checking out tractors its look as if the JD 790 4x4 will be my best bet for what I will be doing. I will be cutting a lot of grass, planting trees, helping the wife landscape and doing some fencing.

I figure I need a good finishing mower and a bushhog. More than likely a FEL. Whats the biggest Finishing mower and bushog the 790 can handle? How much of an option is a FEL?

From what I hear a rear PTO is a must.....

Any of you southern buyers have an idea of what type of percentage to negotiate of MSRP. What is a good ball park price for a 790 4x4 with FEL, Bhog, and Finishing mower?

I know I know us newbies have a billion quiestions. Thanks for any and all help. Look forward to hanging here!

I just priced a JD 790 4x4 with FEL (419) and a LX5 rotary cutter at Georgia Turf and Tractor in Alpharetta, GA for $15,900 plus tax. Do not have a clue on a finish mower. I would also suggest you look at a Kubota B7800 or B2910 4x4. They both have hydro trans. and same H.P. as the 790. The JD790 is a collar shift and I can tell you from experience the older you get the more you appreciate the hydro. I priced a B2910 4x4 with a FEL and 5 ft. bushhog at Goss Kubota, Jasper, GA and Mason Tractor, Blue Ridge and they both were about 18K including tax and several more goodies than what the JD dealer priced the 790. About a grand more for the Kubota 2910 but in my opinion well worth it. The B7800 also has hydro trans. without a few of the goodies on the 2910 but you can save about $1500 on it. I priced a JD 4115 4x4, hydro (24hp) with the same equipment and they wanted $19,500 + tax. Kubota should be announcing a new model to replace the 2910 later this month and I'm waiting to see how it stacks up. I have been told the price should be in the same range as the B2910. Both are good machines.

Here's what I paid about 2 months ago..

790 4wd R4's (filled rear) DSCV

The total for the tractor, loader, and weights (everything but the implements) was $13,664

the older you get the more you appreciate the hydro.

I never drove a hydro in my life until this summer. If you plan on mowing along a fence line, you will appreciate the hydro much more. I am not knocking the 790, because it is a time-proven design, but you may want to consider others for mowing.

I got a 24% discount off MSRP on my 4410. Where are you located in GA? I have a friend in S GA that actually paid more for his 4310 with fewer options than I did here in NW GA. Hope that helps.

790 4x, 419 loader, lx5, 14650 no tax, farm account. 790 Will do a lx6 but I m glad I got the 5 footer for ease around trees and such. In searching I went on Deeres web site found the 4 closest dealers e mailed all, got best quote then carried it to the dealer I wanted to buy from and told him to beat the price.

I've got a 60" Rear Mower, but the 790 can handle a 72" mower with no problem (other then weight, possibly).

I'd had the mower for a few years..when I got my 790 last Spring, I kept the mower I used with a smaller tractor (Deere 670). I wish I had a 72"...the 60" looks mighty small behind the tractor. But I'd rather spend the money on a chipper next year.

Good tractor...I think you'll like it!

I got the 72" RFM (Frontier/Woods) w/ my 790. It seems to handle it fine; I haven't looked up to see what it weighs, however (the 3 pt seems to handle it fine). Makes short work of mowing my lots.

I'm a newbie to tractoring as well, but I found getting used to the gear tranny on my 790 easy enough. Just select which gear seems best for the job, and go with it.
