WOW, that's one heck of a first pot jamekar! Welcome to TBN!

and THANK YOU... I am reading all this w/ an open mind, I am VERY appreciative, keep it coming ! :)

I know of a nice property you might be interested in, it's in Northern Idaho above Bonners Ferry. It's 80 acres, timber paster and WATER. Big log home and all kinds of stuff. You will not believe the price. Let me know if your interested I'll put in touch with my nephew. You will defiantly get it well below current value.

Thanks. I've wanted to start posting, but I've been so darn busy since joining. Got a new Kubota L3700SU last year, and have been enjoying learning how to use my first tractor. Always something to do after work such as building something, or tweaking this, or pruning that, and we are always learning and open minded to see how others are being creative with this homesteading/farming thing. I've learned a lot about what works and what doesn't in a relatively short time, but I'm constantly experimenting. I can't stress enough about how Joel Salatin's vision has influenced me and so many others. Lot's of small farmers in upstate NY have bought into the grass-based economy and are making it and having an enjoyable and gratifying lifestyle. You're not going to get rich, but you can be successful enough to enjoy a much better life than the rat race so many have.

As a native Californian I encourage you to "Get out of Dodge." We left two years ago for the Cumberland plateau in Tennessee. I can't say enough about how nice the people here are. Except for a couple of years in my early forties I lived in California all my life. Those other 2-1/2 I lived in rural East Texas attending school to get a teaching degree. While people were cordial enough, it was obvious that I couldn't become a part of the community, at least not for 10 years or more. Here it's a whole different story. The native Tennesseans and the migrants from all over the country have been genuinely nice, friendly and accepting. Land prices are quite reasonable compared to California, taxes are low ($900+/- on a $300K house) no income tax although sales tax is close to 10% and is levied on everything, including food. The politicians are sane and not trying to support everyone and his brother and don't try to restrict whatever you want to do. Currently gasoline is about $3.50. My car tags this year for a 2010 luxury vehicle were $14. I really like it here and wouldn't move back. Oh, and unless you get into a big city, you won't be seeing any traffic cams.

If you want to farm for your benefit and not for the Bank, John Deere, and Monsanto, check out Polyface, Inc. | The Farm of Many Faces and do some reading or even work there.
Around me the only conventional farmers doing well are the big ones, but there's quite a few niche farmers that do well producing food that isn't a commodity. Pastured pork, Bison, goat cheese, direct to customer weekly garden produce, etc.
You do need to be near a market for this stuff as the Walmart crowd doesn't get it, but with the grocery store prices steadily being jacked up, more people may decide they might as well get some quality for their food dollars.

You guys in Canada have a far different economy than we do. We are almost 3rd world by comparison. The niche farming for the foodies only works in upscale urban areas, like college towns here.

I wish you the best of luck! People vote with their feet when they can't be heard at the ballot box.

I moved home to Texas from Orange County, CA in 1975. Texas is a right to work state and the economy here seems to be better than a lot of other states. The construction trades seem to be dominated by Latinos especially around metropolitan areas. They have not migrated out to my rural area as of yet. The lifestyle here is much slower than CA and there will be some culture shock if you land here. Homes in Texas are a bargain and land can still be purchased, although prices are going up. Farming is generally done by the big boys or the old timers that know everybody, or so it seems. We have no state income tax.

We have had some rough times as far as the weather. Droughts and wild fires have taken a toll, but we now seem to be getting some rain. By far we are a conservative state with a few pockets of liberalism - politically speaking.

There is rich black farm land in central Texas, very sandy soil with lots of pine trees in East Texas, desert in West Texas and lots of farming in the Panhandle area.

Getting out of Ca no matter where you land will probably be the smartest move you can make.

I did my get out of dodge move a year ago. We left the city and moved out into "rural America". I hope you find yourself a little kingdom like my wife and I have. Please keep this thread updated as to where you settle, so I can keep cheering you on.

Between the farm subsidies and all the factors driving the price of corn and wheat, dirt farming can be quite profitable. Dairy farming is tough. And starting into farming as a way to support a family is almost impossible due to the high cost of farmland. But if you are part of a farming family, and grow corn and grain, it's not a bad gig these days.

Must be very different down there with subsidies then ! Dairy is probably the best here .

If you want to get a farmer's BP up, ask him how much he gets in subsidies. They really, really hate the EWG database that's on the web.
