When I got my JD2240 last year it came with a set of duels but no bolts to attach them. I'm getting ready to order the bolts and put on the duels.

I have had two thoughts about doing this and was curious of what others thought of my ideas.

1) install both duels facing forward as normal,
2) install the duels backwards to increase traction when backing.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think duals on a tractor make the tractor look awesome. Putting the tires on backwards kind of dampens the effect.

Thanks for your thoughts. I keep swinging back and forth about which way I want to mount them. I kind of agree with you about the looks of having the duels backwards, but the idea of the extra traction when backing has merits also. That's why I thought I would throw this out for opinions.

I understand your reasoning. I do know how worthless tractor tires are going backwards. What you gain going backwards you will lose going forward.

Duals are generally used on bigger machines to lower the ground pressure so as to avoid excess soil compaction, and not so much for increased traction. The reason the European tractors have such wide tires is because they cannot travel over their narrow roads with American duals.

The added width of duals also give a tractor much added stability on traversing side hills.

Yeah, forward is better.

when I worked at a cattle operation, (many moons ago, shoot many suns ago) we always put one outside tire on backwards, just for the reversing traction. But I agree they look better the other way. And I really don't know how much it was ever needed.

First, you need to decide if you bought the tractor to work efficiently...or look cool. Although a tractor can be both...you need to determine which has higher priority.
The only thing I've ever read was to reverse the front tires (on a MFWD machine, of course) to assist in backing out.
