I have been digging a pond for two years. We have been using my skidsteer, backhoe, and 12 yard dump truck. We were making progress but slowly. Today we brought him the big guns. A Deere 850k dozer, a Hitachi 300 excavator, two belly dumps plus my 12 yard dump truck. In about 3.5 hours we hauled off 45 loads of dirt. Amazing what big machinery can do. At this pace we might finish digging tomorrow.

Looking great! Big machines and a butt in everything makes things so much quicker!

Previous owner of the farm I have now dug a pond with a pond scoop and tractor. Used the top soil for the ****. Needles to say it doesn't hold water. I'm in the process of leveling it back out. May have someone that knows what their doing come later and build one but it won't be in the same spot.

That's going to be a nice size by the looks of the pictures. Going to have some fish in it or just for watering livestock?

We will be putting fish in it. Not sure yet if I am going to use a plastic liner or bentonite to seal it.

It will be about 1/3 of an acre and 10-12' deep.

For that size of a pond, be sure to only put one type of predator fish in there. Copper Nose bluegill are probably the best choice for a feeder fish. Add some fathead minnow to keep the bluegill and your predator fish happy is a good idea too. Do you like catfish or bass? Channel cats would do better then blue cats. Large mouth bass need to be fished pretty regular to allow the blue gill to grow big enough to encourage the bass to grow. If not, you end up with a pond full of small bass. Rule of thumb is 100 pounds total weight of predator fish per acre of surface water. Figure 30 to 40 pounds for your pond size.

Very nice. I'm sure when it's done you'll be happy and I'll be jealous.
