Those of us that live in Tx know that the concealed carry law is changing Jan 1 to allow open carry. A part of that is that the required training class is going from 4 hours to 8 hours so I decided now was the time to go ahead and get the whole family through before the change. My 20 year old daughter has shot some but never had much passion for it and had never shot a handgun so I took her and my wife out for some target practice yesterday before the class today. I think they did pretty well, the high shots were me at 15 yards with a hot barrel just popping off, the rest of it is them.

My daughter was a lot intimidated at first, even though she's shot before the school/media/societal indoctrination had her pretty frightened of the handgun. We worked through it slowly and patiently though and after an hour she was popping off rounds like a pro. I bring that up to say that I made a mistake in waiting this long to teach her to shoot the handgun, those of you with younger kids, I would encourage you to start them as early as you feel they're responsible enough to handle it. If you don't teach them what you want them to learn with action, the rest of the world will teach them something for you and it might not be what you would like.

Good deal. It looks like she is well on her way. But keep up the practice, make it a fun outing to improve skill levels. I have taught many hundreds of women to shoot handguns over a 10 year period, and I look back on it as a rewarding experience for them and me.

Looks like she picked it up well. I have lots of good memories as a kid target shooting with my family. When my daughter is old enough I can't wait to teach her to shoot.

By the time it was over with, she was enjoying herself, you could see the little 1/2 smirk when it was her turn to shoot again. We're heading to our property tomorrow morning for a week, she'll be shooting skeet and my new .17HMR, I'm sure she'll want to shoot the handgun some more as well.

I will say that my experience with female shooters is that they're usually more accurate than men. They're more patient and seem to have better fine motor control than we do. That's fine with me though, I'm accurate enough to be effective. :)

My experience with teaching female shooters is that for the most part they come to the table without preconceived notions of how to shoot and without machismo. A lot of guys will pretend they "know it all" because they are guys. Most females don't pretend anything. They just listen and soak up the wisdom and techniques you are trying to impart into them. So overall they seem to make better students with no bad habits to break, and the learning process seems to go faster. I have had a few that seemed unteachable, but for the most part, it all went well, and much progress was made.

Thank God and our Constitution that you .......... and the rest of us have a choice.

Well, the "naysayer" is up in Canada. So he has no constitutional protection. The chances of him taking his loved ones out to shoot handguns are pretty darn slim.

Glad your family is leaning to defend themselves. Waiting on others to protect you will be to little to late.

My daughter (30) started learning and carrying three years ago when she realized the police are a long time away when the threat is in your home.
Her cousin had intruders break into her house and it took police 10 minutes to get there. Her cousin is moving rather than defend herself.
