I've seen pto gensets with weld rectifier. Look up ZENA welder also. It runs off altenator.

Who Replied?i dont understand how i can break my machine because its still within its operating limits - or anre you referring to the fan idea.
yes i do own it and it was onlt £59 - ok not just pennies but not a fortune
i dont have a dog but the free roaming guinea pigs leg it when ever i strike an arc so thats fine

im not really into theory so i guess i cant be any good at welding - but the welds are getting better
i did something that needed to be done - wedeed an exhaust onto an old mower and it worked didnt break at all /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, to be young again!! Jumping the grand canyon with a motorcyle is probably within the limits of the clycle, but its not something most of us would do. Right? Remember, young man, you asked us old timers for advice, we aren't forcing you to take it.

JD, your sage advice brought a smile to my lips and a chuckle to my heart! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Mith, you'd be well served to listen to these guys. I've found they know what they are talking about! Burning a lot of wire with my new Lincoln 135 mig! I can't wait to get in my shop and weld something these days.

I was referring to the "Why not?" attitude of young folks, which is good. It's just that in these forums we don't have time to explain everything we say in the depth as we would if we had you sitting at our knee. Heck, I can remember spending 2 hours explaining the purpose of "slag" to a student. Can't do that here, my old fingers are to stiff any more.
We base our advice on years of experience (45 in my case, including an AAS degree in Welding Technolgy, and Computer Maintenance a BS in Occupational Educational and ME in Master of Education as well as TX Teaching Certifications in "Metal Trades", Building Trades", "Welding Trades" and "Industrial Arts" I Spent 21 years in the AF as an Instructor in the NASA programs, and 20 years teaching at the high school and College level. I don't even know how many certifications I have held. Lot of the guys here have more experience than me. So the point is, I don't think we will give you any bad advice.

I do not know what the duty cycle is of your machine. I just took you to mean you had worked it really hard for a good while as in "worked it to see what it would do". ( beyond its cycle to see if it would take it)
Like when I was young, I would always take my new car out to see what it would do. FULL BORE, sometimes till something broke.... lol.... Hopefully you didn't run it till it started smelling funny. It's pretty easy to ruin some of todays comsumer products.
As for the fan,,, probably wouldnt hurt - but would be better to just run within its design limits and not void the warranty by modifying the unit. I'll defer that to someone else that is experienced in such things.

Forget how inexpensive that welder was, and treat it like gold.
Do the same thing with all your tools and toys for that matter.
HEck wax and polish your welder.
When your folks see you taking meticulous care of your tools and toys they will be inclined to buy you top line goods since they know you will take care of them - and in the end you wind up with high quality gifts.

My son got to where he didn't take good care of the tools and toys I bought him,,, so I just started buying cheap since he would loose and tear it up right away anyhow.
He is gettin better now about taking care of stuff.

texastomtom - i cant push my welder over its duty cycle it switches itself off after a while when it gets hot
i push my tools hard but treat them right - the mower gets a bath after ever mow (so do i /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif) i got the small welder (cheap) so i could weld thin stuff as the larger ones had a higher minimum amperage
