Rual living is great my wife and I will only move back when age catches up with us.
The thing that all should be on the look out for is how close are you to a land grabbing city. We where just happy as can be when when low and behold here they come and the lies that are told are amazing and this is from people you know but when they get on city council look out. Power cause humans to do crazy things all under " this is the best for you" we know it is so shut up.
I do not have a answer only shake my head in wonder.

When in a group, committee, city council, etc., people will make decisions that are incredibly stupid. I have seen this over and over--intelligent people that make first-class decisions for themselves but the group sinks below the lowest intelligence of the dumbest member of the group when dealing with public money or policy. True synergy at work.

Back on topic: I enjoy both places. I have lived in the country and smack in the middle of Chicago; both have their positives, both have their negatives. However, once a city gets to the size where it has more than one of any particular business (such as two K-marts, two Burger Kings, etc.), it's size above that point is just repetition. For me, a Division I college town is just about right and from the ones I've seen, they're all pretty nice. Setting politics aside, I'd live in one of them any day.

Unfortunately, my livelihood dictates where I will live for now. I was not smart enough to get a very portable career, which is a mistake I have stressed to my kids not to make. There is also the consideration of school systems. Big city school systems are something to which I would never subject my children.

In my ideal world, I would own both.

We live 7 miles from the city in a rural location with about 4400 other folks. It is a very small community and just the way we like it. We own about 45+- acres of land between the two houses and a 36'x60 barn and a three car garage with over 1200+ acres of protected property behind us. City Life? never in my lifetime. We may eventually start raising some type of livestock here as it is zoned as farmland. My daughter will be moving into the old homestead where the barn is once I get it finished. The houses are 200 yards apart.

I grew up in the city (Cleveland Ohio) and I'll never go back. But, I'm only about 30 minutes from Toledo and can go to the city whenever I want. Our utilities are considerably cheaper in the country. The only advantages I could see to living in the city are roads that get plowed in the winter and city water.
The wife's sister lives in Perrysburg Oh. How far are you from there?

I was just wondering how many would give up the life in the country to move to the city for the convenience of jobs, shoping, and things to do like go the movies. I've experienced boredom and even the unqualified service people that you get by living the small life. People make a living or try even if they don't have the experience to do service on your home. The city might have a recourse to get people like this. Try suing when you don't have a company to sue

Sorry but i apearr to be very late to this thread, but anyhow i will put in my thoughts. i have always lived in the country all 65 yrs of my life, granted i alway worked in the city 30 miles away but retired now and could never imagine living in a city, even when it becomes impossible for me to take care of my acerage i will still stay in the country. major shopping is only 20 min. away, supermarkes are up in town 10 min. and i love to see the wildlife in my yard and woods. would rather look out the window at trees and grass than the guy next door. another thing is i always hire (when nedded) from the area and have found most service people to be e fine if not i don't hire them, just because a service is from the city does not mean they are any better. guess i will get off the soap box now but it rally all come down to the individual person. WHATS BEST FOR YOU
