I hope I made the right choice. I thought many nights about doing the right thing and what is best for our family in the long run. Here are a few reasons we decided to sell.
1. I want my sons to be able to have everything including a rural lifestyle that includes having animals like my wife got to enjoy on her parents farm growing up.She never got to go on vacations growing up, on the other we lived in the city but seen alot of the world before the age of 12 ( still plenty more to see though). At the same time I want to enjoy the country life also and be able to afford vacations and allow them to be diverse individuals and see the world with mom and dad. I think seeing the world will have a better impact on the kids than living on our own farm. We still live in the country just on an acre lot and cant have farm animals though..Maybe a goat and some chickens but that is it.
2. Most compelling reason I wanted to sell is if something ever happens to me I want my home to be paid off so my wife would not have to face foreclosure along with tragedy. Hopefully our seven year old home will be paid in full before I turn 30 years old.Not bad having a 180K house that will be paid for sitting on a little over an acre.
3. Five years since we bought and still not being able to see a tractor in my future to care for the land and having to hire neighbors to do the work. Bills, me going to school still and having 2-3 years left and having more children combined with the extended drive we would face 40 miles one way to work vs. our current 25 mile drive. It just is not feasiable for us to build the house (modest size 2000ft) afford a tractor, build a barn to properly store it, and have any hopes of gettting ahead in life and put money into retirement.
We split the property into smaller parcels and sold one. We have 12 acres left that is now paid for free and clear we are closing on next week. Its been fun to dream, shopping for the land was a great expereince and half the fun.Been called a fool for buying land and having this dream of a a farm by freinds and family. We got to see alot of the country otherwise most people would never see unless it went up for sale.
I will buy more land if I ever graduate from college and get the job i want. But for now I must remain humble, thankful for what we got, and live within our income.
