10 years ago propane prices were somewhat high so we purchased a wood pellet/corn stove as our main heat source.I see history repeats itself as propane prices are VERY high this year.We only use 1 tank (500 gal.)per year now.We bought propane back in august for $1.25 gal. and still have around 51% in our tank.I feel very sorry for the elderly folks who are on a fixed income who are struggling to heat there homes at these prices.

Pellet stoves are nice. One came with our house when we bought it five years ago. You have to use one to really appreciate them.

If you are refering to the price of propane/electricity/natural gas, and yes, wood pellets to heat one's home during this really cold winter.......then.......Yes, I agree that perhaps that a pellet stove is nice; but for me, havin my wood stove, 27 acres of oak and hickory trees, and time to get that wood to the stove is the best of all worlds. We have 2 heat pumps but neither have been on in 12 years. Having those 10 cords of curing and cured firewood currently in the shed ready to rock and roll is surely money in MY bank.........God bless......Dennis

The wife and I were going to go the wood stove route a few years back as we have 11 acres plus to cut wood on.After some thought we are getting up in years and did not like the idea of cutting wood all year just to heat with. Not knocking wood heat just our own personal reasons.

I'm checking into them as well for a heat source. Electric heat is costly

Weren't people complaining about the price of pellets a couple years ago?

Ultimatley, unless your using wood, nothing is really free, and you're subject to the demand of supply (and even with wood, what do you charge yourself for the time and labor?)

In NC, for 3500 sq feet, 500 gallons of LP will last me all winter (for back up heat for the heat pump systems).

Getting to the point now with a GOOD mini split system, a heat pump will product 100% heat at 5 degrees, with some producing 100% heat below zero. Still not like wood, but it's slowly getting there.

I agree wood pellets were around $125 a ton 10 years ago.I purchase them in july and can buy them for $175 per ton.Inflation I guess?Burning wood pellets right now sure beats the heck out of burning propane,LOL.

I believe one of the things that affects wood pellets prices is the price of diesel as they have to trucked at some point. I am still buying them for $180-190 per ton in the summer. 'Premium' brands with higher BTU ratings cost more like $220 but I have done the math and you paying a lot for those few extra BTU's. I buy my pellets based on what they look like not some marketing guys idea of 'added value'.

I've got to ask, what is the square footage of your house and what does the total cost of pellets run you to heat your home? I have no clue with a pellet stove.
