Glow plug troubleshooting

Hi again James,
Thanks for another prompt reply. I think you have the calculation right this time. I'm surprised by some of your comments. The ohmmeter I have was the cheapest available when I bought it almost forty years ago and it is fairly easy to see the difference between a half ohm resistance and a short. As for glowplugs connected in series: there were probably some good reasons for doing it that way but I'm getting off topic with that. I would guess there were many tractors wired that way - those two schematics were the first two I looked at and I stopped looking after finding those. At any rate, it seems that oberscrounge has found his problem which is the main thing.

Well, to see these low resistances, and differentiate between them you would have to know how to zero your ohmmeter to account for lead length etc. Yes, I know how to do these things, and I am confident you do too. But we are asking a lot from persons that do not fully understand these concepts or even how to interpret their instruments.

As far as I know, newbies can post right away.

I believe there is a size limit to each picture. I don't know off hand what that is. Have you tried reducing their size before attempting to up load?

I just replaced the 3 glow plugs in my NT254 tractor which I've had for about 10 years. The tractor had just recently become very hard to start even in 40 degree weather. I ordered the replacement plugs from Northern Tool and Equipment where I bought the tractor and they came in about 2 days. I am not very mechanically inclined, but this was a fairly easy job. All together it took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. I don't know about other tractors, but on mine the plugs came out easily, especially using a deep well socket. It's running good now. I checked the old glow plugs and two out of the three were open. Like a previous poster said: open is bad, shorted is good! As a retired broadcast engineer/announcerand amateur radio operator I am very familiar with the Ohms law as another poster had mentioned. If you want to do your own electrical type repairs it is good to be familiar with it and to have a good reliable multi meter, either digital or analog and know how to use it.
