Does anyone know how to check glowplugs to see if they are bad. I turn on the switch to heat them up and nothing happens there is 12 volts at the plug but no heat. I checked the plug with a meter and theres no conection between the two ends. Its so hard too crank when its cold I'm afraid that I'm going to burn the starter up.

Check the resistance with an ohm meter. one probe on the body and one on the terminal. if it is open then it is no good.

You can also use a test light. With the plugs still in the engine, disconect wires from plugs, hook the test light clamp to the positive side of the battery and touch the pionted side of test light to the terminal of the plug. If it lights up plug is ok if not replace plug.

Most glow-plugs can be removed just like a conventional spark plug. It's very easy to remove one and do a visual inspection on the resistance coil as well.

If you have a compression release it is much easier on the starter and engine to use it for cold starts.

well I've took them out and they look ok but when I test them I different readings two of them I don't get a reading and the other two I get readings one is higher than the other. You did say put one end of the tester on the wire end and the other on the base where the socket goes.

I never used an ohm meter to check mine. I simply pulled them out and used a couple of jumper wires to apply 12 volts to each glow plug to test them. They will get hot real quick so don't be holding them with your bare hands use a pair of pliers or vise grips. If they don't get hot then they get replaced. You did say that you had 12 volts to each glow plug before removing them correct?

One thing to remember when checking for voltage on a 12-volt system is to check the voltage with the load on the circuit. If there is a lose or corroded connection in your circuit and you check it with no load it may read a full 12-volts, but when the load is applied the circuit cannot carry the current and the voltage will drop off very low or to zero volts. In other words, check your voltage with the glow plugs connected, not with the connectors off just hanging free.

Well thanks for the info guys. I found three were bad and replaced them today and it cranked but still seems that its taking long but it might be normal because this is the first winter I've had it.

Paintdreams I don't think you ever said if you had a compression release on your Shabaura. If you do fire up the glow plugs first, then hit your compression release so that you can easily crank the engine without resistance. Once you release the compression release it should then fire up much easier.

Well I don't know if it does but where would it be located if it had one. Theres a light when you turn the switch just before it turns the motor over its on for a few seconds I think its the wait light but not sure.
