Actually, one of the things I like best about Weldwood is that it is a very forgiving glue. It forms a joint that is truly "stronger than the wood itself" and fills small gaps in the process. Heck, you can even mix it thick and use it almost like putty. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I guess I made that statement from an aviation standpoint (A&P, IA) where glues of that family are used for bonding aircraft structure (airplanes still use wood--ask glueguy--nature's composite). I suppose for general purposes you can glop it on and call it good, /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . That is ok, JB weld makes my skin crawl and causes me to have anxiety attacks, so you can imagine what filled gaps in a wood to wood joint might make me do if it is my number that is going on the line.

Yep, JR, if I was betting my life on a glue joint I'd do better than just "glop it on". /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Fact is, I used Weldwood for furniture, boats and dozens of other applications, and I never actually used the "glop" method. When I said it was "forgiving", I just meant that the joint didn't have to be so perfect that light didn't show through, as is the case with some thinner glues.

The normal procedure is to brush it on generously and then clamp the pieces firmly until you see it oozing slightly the entire perimeter of the joint. That pretty much guarantees that there are effectively no gaps left. I never in my life saw a joint like that fail, so I call it "good". /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

As for gluing airplanes together, that's one of those things I feel better not even thinking about. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Let me tell you Harv, I thought plenty about it, and if you read my bio (I know you have /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif), there is more weight in glue in my Long-EZ than just about any other single component (excepting possibly the engine, but it's close). In fact, Ithink I spent about 7 years thinking about glue integrity for that thing. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Harv and Bird,

I followed up on Mike and Harv's lead and bought some "Weldwood Plastic Resin". I tried it on a sample and it is tough stuff. It's a urea formaldehyde. light tan powder, mixes with water, has the color of a sugar daddy when dry, sands without gumming, takes stain, and is water resistant. I think its the same stuff I used to use./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
you can even mix it thick and use it almost like putty Harv I use it that way also, mix it with saw dust from your project and it provides a darn good match.
It is know to cause cancer in California, didn't say anything about Washington or Texas.

I also bought some Gorilla Glue that DocHeb suggested, it better be good $14, 8oz.
I have a Teak sample drying now.

Holy cow, Al! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gifThis thread is only a couple of days old, and you've already been to the store, bought it and tried it? Seems to me it takes a while, like overnight, for drying, too.I forgot about mixng sawdust with the stuff. I've done that a time or three myself. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Sands, drills and machines good, too. Only problem I recall is shrinkage, but even that's okay if you plan ahead.

That's only 'cuz in California we suck it up our nose with a straw. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Harv, I should not have accused you of "glopping" your glue /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . I see you make furniture and stuff like that and so would take that as an insult--I am sorry /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif . I will not think that you are a glue glopper anymore!

If that's your idea of an insult, J, you obviously need to go back to insult school. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I ain't near the craftsman my father was, but I do give it my best shot. Pop could make wood joints that fit so well that they almost didn't need glue at all. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif He did it by eyeball and mostly used hand tools. I, on the other hand, use precision measuring devices and power tools, and I frequently have to throw the pieces away and try again. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Some traits are directly inherited, others must skip a generation. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

And here I always thought it was a rolled up $100 bill. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif Thanks for the clarification. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif
