You can still grow them. Start them from seeds, or I can buy the plants in spring from the local greenhouse. I don't remember ever seeing Beefeater fruit in the grocery store.

Tomato's used to be nice to eat, today they have tough skins, actual roots inside, and taste like s---t.

Do you remember a tomato called 'beefeater'? now that was a tomato!

yeah, applied the real seven dust to the plants until they said the real seven dust caused cancer.
Now they make a seven dust that isn't the same

I bet chemicals worse than seven dust, and round up are being used on all the stuff we get from other countries.

Wonder what mexico, and Brazil are giving their beef ?

All these countries are using stuff on the things we eat that's far more dangerous than I spray my fence lines with

No worries though. I'm sure our government is keeping us safe !

Two weeks ago my son brought me a whole shopping bag full of tomatoes out of his garden. Now it makes me wonder what those tough, tasteless, orange globes are that they sell at the grocery store. MY GOD - his tomatoes were good. I ate them with everything except my oatmeal in the morning and my dish of ice-cream in the evening. I share my dish of ice cream with my chocolate lab puppy - - he told me, "no tomatoes on my ice cream".

Hey - who, beside me, remember when we used DDT? Thank goodness this country does not have widespread malaria or other tropical diseases.

I remember when DDT and Toxaphene were widely used on tobacco crops. Tox makes DDT look like candy. Tox is a mixture of over 675 separate chemical compounds. Toxaphene is one of the few compounds on this earth that has the ability to kill every form of living thing on this planet.

when I was a kid we used motor oil as a weed killer along fences...bad? Not sure.
Oil comes from the earth...

Cars and such leak oil.
Roads are made of oil (tarmac/blacktop/tar and chip)

Nobody talks about all the rubber out there ... tires wear out and the rubber goes where?

Like global warming - EVERY city is warmer than ANY country setting..and cities keep growing. Buildings/paving hold heat more than a pasture or forest. You burn gas/diesel or heat your house (or run your a/c) and you make heat - and LOTS of it. Run something in an enclosed area and the area heats up..why would the planet not work teh same?

Yet there's no movement to reduce pavement, heat absorbtion, etc.

As for GMO's and the like, go read "no blade of grass', a novel from the 70s or so, about a gov't 'agent orange' type weapon that gets loose. It kills all grass-based life - grass, but also corn, wheat, rice, etc.

the more we go to a monoculture the more vulnerable we are.

A friend once pointed out, or asked, where I thought all those millions of tubes of grease go?

Our Tomatoes this year were pathetic. But some local girls gave me an incredible assortment of incredible tomatoes. Some purple, looking more like plums.

We may not like chemicals but I'm also not a fan of "organic" the production and yield is much less per acre and the cost of production is much higher.
And many times the quality of the product decreases.
That is certainly the case with apples, organic apples that come in look like junk and they pay a premium for them.
Remember, just because it says organic does not mean that it was not sprayed with chemicals. It just means that the farmer paid extra for organic certified chemicals.
