I can remember watching my dad do a valve job on 1949 Buick straight 8. That head was heavy.

I believe the 1953 Buick Super was when Buick went to the V-8 engines. My Dad bought a 1953 about 1957. And of course I remember many oddities when I was working in my Dad's service stations 1956-1959. One was about 1958 when a badly faded, chalky looking, light blue 1940 Buick came in for gas with a very old black chauffeur in a suit and cap and a very old white haired white woman in the back seat. I thought of that the first time I saw the movie "Driving Miss Daisy". But the odd thing was that when I checked the oil, I noticed that straight 8 engine had 2 carburetors. I thought someone had modified it, and asked the chauffeur about it, but he said, "Oh no. Miss XXXX bought this car new and it's all original." He said he'd been driving for her since before she bought that car. I saw lots of straight 8 Buicks, but that was the only one I ever saw with multiple carburetors.

The first car I remember with multiple carbs was when I was a kid... we had an early-mid 70's VW van with dual two-barrels. As I recall, my dad had to keep taking it back to the dealer over and over again. Way too many problems with the engine. He finally got disgusted and wrote to VW headquarters, got an attorney involved, etc... turns out the thing had some experimental Porche engine in it and something to do with the pistons being installed upside down (as it was explained to me as a kid), and it ate the valves twice. Anyhow, VW refunded all his repair money and rebuilt the engine. Crazy thing would do mini-wheelies and jump the front tires over beer cans. :laughing:

I did a quick search and found that it looks like in 41 and 42 they had dual carbs on them.

We did some work to this 55 Buick with a nail head. After we got done working on it he took it to an auction and it brought $42,000. The car was unrestored and had 50,000 IIRC.
