That's a big one. I wonder if that was a 2 stroke diesel? The reason I ask is because it has those lower areas around the rim of the piston.

This exactly where I didn't want my thread to go, that bashing is occuring already on other threads please leave it on those.......thanks

to get us back on track here is a picture of a piston I now use for a ashtray in my garage, it is from a late 1950's Euclid mine truck, almost 6 inch diameter........when I was in my twenties I found it in an abandoned mine warehouse building in Northern ontario that operated from 1957 to 1964. My now deceased Father in law was a mechanic at that mine and knew what it was from, I will note it has an old valve that they inserted in a burn't hole in the top of the piston so they could reuse the piston.
Can't imagine what cubic inch that engine was.

How is telling the truth bashing?????????????

Truth or not, bashing or not... the thread was getting off track bringing the newer powertrain issues to the forefront. Lets focus on the classics as was intended.

The under powered diesels have better fuel efficiency than the over powered diesels because. A 60HP diesel making 40HP cruise power is more fuel efficient that a 120HP diesel making 40HP for cruising.
A hazard in traffic, on freeways and up hills.

Hence the long hoods in those days. Nice reminder picture of the straight 8, sure would be nice to work on those.

Well come get this one running:laughing:

I believe the 1953 Buick Super was when Buick went to the V-8 engines. My Dad bought a 1953 about 1957. And of course I remember many oddities when I was working in my Dad's service stations 1956-1959. One was about 1958 when a badly faded, chalky looking, light blue 1940 Buick came in for gas with a very old black chauffeur in a suit and cap and a very old white haired white woman in the back seat. I thought of that the first time I saw the movie "Driving Miss Daisy". But the odd thing was that when I checked the oil, I noticed that straight 8 engine had 2 carburetors. I thought someone had modified it, and asked the chauffeur about it, but he said, "Oh no. Miss XXXX bought this car new and it's all original." He said he'd been driving for her since before she bought that car. I saw lots of straight 8 Buicks, but that was the only one I ever saw with multiple carburetors.
