GM, Dodge and Ford engine sizing in the past

The small V8 is currently being used in formula1 racing (2.4L) and Hayabusa is making one with 420hp to put on a bike.. . Someone (BMW?) made a 3 liter V10. I think the V8's of the future will become "fad" engines. It's much cheaper to build a 4 or 6 cyl engine and slap a turbo on it. They can even fake engine sounds now with a flip of a switch (ugh).
Personally, I like the lopity -lope idle of an old iron V8 built for HP.

Yes. I loved sitting at the lake listening to the big Fountains come rolling in with triple big block 502's or better.

Oaktree: I heard the Dodge and Plymouth K cars are now collectable, along with the Ford Fairmont. As for the topic, my 86 Nissan has a 3L v6, my wife's 93 Honda has a ?L, but my 86 Ford F250 has a 460 Cubic Inch Displacement engine. Can I get a "Heck Ya"? The Ford has 79K, the Honda has 240K and my daily driver 86 Nissan has 337K. Remember stepping on the gas pedal to set the choke, before starting, and doing it again to lower the high speed idle, after it started? I love fuel injection, the increased longevity of the engine, the improved fuel economy, and the "start and go" it provides without warm up, and let's not forget the substantial reductions in emissions. New is mo beta, IMO. Why no one mentioned the Chevy 302, 283 stroked 4' bored screamer. 445A

I don't know if I believe this. Maybe, but I doubt it.

.

Fair enough Mike. Allow me to explain. A turbo assembly can be put on by auto manufacturers fairly cheaply. When Chrysler ran out of the 3.0 liter V6's to put in the Caravans in the late 80's, they plopped in the 2.2 with a turbo. It cost them maybe 1000 bucks per copy if that to do so. Mount the turbo, run an exhaust pipe to it, aspirate it back to the ebngine and you're done. Sure mains, pistons and cranks might have been beefed up, but they had these parts for other high performance applications. Now, lets make 400 hp out of 2.4 liter V8. Pistons would be "over square" because now, you've given up stroke length. This means machining a block with thicker walls. To save weight, the engine might be aluminum which adds dearly to the cost. The entire valve geometry needs a total re think with more than likely at least 4 valves per cylinder, much stronger pistons, springs and crank. To make hp, you now need rpms instead of cu in. Not saying they'd spin to 12,000 or so, but if they did, they now have to use pneumatic valve springs to withstand the pressure. Basically, that is the large problem with the smaller V8. Everything needs to be made stronger. It's a balance of over coming increased frictional pressure, with producing higher hp numbers . Get's expensive in production, metallurgy and more sophisticated parts.

Here is one I bet most people don't remember. How about the GM 5.7 diesel? It didn't last long. We had a caprice with one when I was a kid. Likely one of the biggest POS diesel engines ever released by the big 3.

I remember people either loving or hating those cars (Chevys/Olds/Buicks) with the 5.7 "diesel". If you got a good one they were pretty good, slow but very good mileage, plus the big GM ride quality. If you got a bad one they could be really bad. Saw quite a few practically given away and repowered with a 305/307/350 gas engines. Turned Americans off of diesel for quite a few years, may still have some lingering effects. GM should have spent a few more $$$$$$$ and went with a proper diesel foundation, I think they would have sold a lot of those cars.

The Olds diesel actually lasted about 10 years from '77 to the mid '80's. We had a '81 Buick Riviera with the diesel, wouldn't spin the wheels but could get about 30 mpg. The Olds diesel was a pretty good engine at the end but the early bad reputation killed it.

I ordered a new '82 GMC pickup with the 6.2 diesel. Blew two headgaskets before it was 3 months old. Traded that truck for an '82 dually diesel and ended up blowing one headgasket and cracking two heads. Got rid of it before it was out of warranty, traded for a new '85 Ford F-350 dually with the 6.9 International diesel. Never had it in the shop while I owned it.

Looks like it only made it form 78-85.

We had a 6.2 as well. Ours ran for nearly 300k before we sold it. The funny thing was Dodge was waay ahead of Chevy and Ford at that time with the Cummins diesel but for some reason people kept buying the Chevy's and Fords.

GM installed the 5.7 Olds in 1/2 ton short bed pickups for a few years. I don't think they were rated to tow anything. The 6.2 diesel came out in the fall of '81 for the '82 models. Ford started offering the International 6.9 in the '83 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Dodge didn't start offering the Cummins until '89 so if you wanted a diesel in the '80's you had a choice of GM or Ford. The 6.9 International was a very good engine. The 6.2 turned into a good engine after they started machining the heads flat and they stopped blowing headgaskets.

The 6.2 diesel was made in a heavy duty emissions engine that was used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and a light duty emissions version for 1/2 ton and Blazers and Jimmys. The heavy emissions engine had the problems with blowing head gaskets. I had an '83 GMC Jimmy with the 6.2 diesel and 700r4 trans. Never had any problems with that engine but the trans blew at 50,000 miles.

One of my brothers had one of the 5.7L diesels in a Cadillac and was happy with it, one of my wife's brothers had one in an Olds that he put way over 100k miles on and was happy with it. And before we became full time RVers, I bought a book on full time RVing that was written by a full time couple who towed a conventional travel trailer behind a Chevy pickup with the 5.7L diesel.

The small V8 is currently being used in formula1 racing (2.4L) ...

The current Formula1 engine is a V6 turbo combined with an electric motor assist. Click Here for additional details. They also limit the fuel flow as well as the total fuel on board since they eliminated refueling during pit stops several years ago. The superb sounds of a V8, V10 or the scream of a V12 is long gone, replaced by a sound like a muffled jake brake. :(

"From 2014 onwards, a Formula One car's power is provided by a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine which produces around 600bhp, though this represents just one component of an F1 car's power unit. An additional 160bhp or so comes from an advanced Energy Recovery System (ERS) which utilises two clever motor generator units (MGU) that convert mechanical and heat energy to electrical energy and vice versa."
