I am a diesel nut. Will always own one.
But I have to tell you, the 5.3L GM gasser is such a good little engine.
I have one in a Loaded 08 Chevy Tahoe with 210,000 miles on it. Still pulls strong. Only thing I did was timing chain & guides at 180K which is considered sort of wear item in the owners manual.
I put a new oil pump in it while I was in there. ;)
Dirt cheap to fix, too.
Original motor and transmission

How did the chain look?

I got to drive a Sierra 1500 with this engine yesterday. Easily the best performing, most refined engine in any light pickup of any brand that I have driven in recent years. Very impressive torque. It just comes on at low throttle and stays there constantly.

The only odd thing was that the engine made a whistling noise, like a windshield leak, whenever I really stomped on the throttle while going 30-60mph. This was an odd erratic noise separate from the turbo whistle (which itself is very subdued and nice to hear). I stopped in a church parking lot to investigate and the noise was not there when revving the engine in neutral (just the nice turbo whistle then). But when moving at speed it would make a warbling whistle whenever I got on the throttle hard, like something was sucking air and leaking.

Best theory I have heard is that maybe the engine was in regen. The truck had 100 miles on it, had been previously taken on an overnight test drive by another customer, and then idled for 10-15 minutes before I did my test drive. I am told the engine makes additional noises while in regen, but nobody has been able to tell me if temporary whistling is one of them. I sure would not consider it to be a normal tolerable noise on a new truck.

I read that the whistling noise was turbo noise....the mags didn't mind it.

The whistling noise I heard was on top of the normal turbo noise (which sounded good to me), and it definitely was not something anyone would want to hear all the time.

I occasionally hear the turbo whistle, but to be honest, I don't hear that all that often. It also makes a ton of clicks, chirps, and assorted noises when you shut it off. I haven't noticed and other noises though - I pretty much hear the radio - usually really loud... I've actually known people who have had tires changed because they were too noisy. Even with cupped mud tires I would rarely hear anything but the radio. When I'm in traffic I'm pretty sure the vehicles beside me may be hearing my radio too. I'm from the "If it's too loud, you're too old generation."

On another note, I filled up the tank tonight and the trip meter was at 691.2 miles, 30.0 mpg, $48.00 to fill at $2.139/gal. After hand calculating it came out to 30.8 mpg, matching a previous tank for my best to date. On this tank the "best 50 mile mpg" went up to 34.5 mpg on the dash gizmo. The low fuel light had just come on but it still said I had 70 miles range on that tank. I think back to my 6.0 gas, which with a 24 gallon tank would safely get me about 250 miles a tank in the winter time. I could stretch that higher in the summer, but still not 300 miles. It's just crazy how far this will go on a 24 gallon tank, and It's been less than $50 to fill up every tank.

The gas guys brag about new fuel mileage on the gas trucks, but diesels havent been just sitting around doing nothing. Theyve been getting more efficient, too :D

Only because the Diesels have out been doing the dirty deed with Puters! Is nothing sacred?

I thought I had seen every ridiculous thing there was, and then last week I saw a Canyon Denali! To me, that is about the same as a Chevette Denali edition.

I've been keeping track of the fuel economy in a spreadsheet since I got it... Here's the totals per fill-up so far. I haven't been using it much lately except for weekly dump runs. I have a 15 year old car that has no real monetary value so i drive that as often as I can when the weather is good. This data is pasted in from a spreadsheet so the formatting isn't the best but you can count across the columns to see what they are.

Very nice, my RAM with the Eco-Diesel is running right at 22 for short trips around home,
and it gets lots of idling.
