Ford announced that they are dropping a few cars and adding capacity for trucks

Americans love their gas guzzling 4x4's

In the big picture of automotive mass production, $24M is like a dollar to you & me. Not really sure how this is news-worthy, but ok...

Oh, and my "gas guzzling 4x4" has better FE than many cars. ;)

Thank's for posting, it's certainly as new worthy as a lot of other stuff that gets posted on here.

OP here. Agree that $24 Million isn't much to them but $5800 is a lot to me. Tariff related?

Ford is phasing out all cars except for the Mustang and something called a Focus Focus Active, which is a Focus hatchback with a suspension lift; I'd guess it's to compete with the Subaru Crosstrek.

My 2015 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L motor gets 24-26mpg on the highway during the summer. Since I've owned it I've averaged about 21-22mpg overall, which is pretty good for a big barn door of a vehicle. I don't tow too often, else my mileage would be lower.

I read that Chevy trucks increase revenue $5800 each over the "model" that they replaced. It doesn't say $5800 increase over a previous pickup model - just "model". That could mean to mean $5800 over some other Chevrolet car model. He just doesn't make that clear...

It is true that pickup prices are outrageously high. I recall that my last new pickup, a 1978 F150, special ordered with a pile of go-fast goodies, was $7800 out the door. Today that same truck would be near $60K. Considering the vast improvements and the vast array of options though, including labor costs, and the fact that they now replace the need for 2 vehicles (a car for the family and a truck for hauling), they're still a pretty good value. IMHO.

It is true that pickup prices are outrageously high.

Its the 25% tariff on light commercial vehicles, the chicken tax, that keeps competition out and prices high. Trump has a point when he says the Euro tariff of 10% on US cars is unfair because the US only has 2.5% on Euro cars, but the US auto industry isnt ready to let go of their cash cow and allow Asian and European competition bring the price of trucks down to a reasonable level...

OP here. My 1999 F250, (window sticker below) listed for $35,645. In today's $, that would be $53,500. How does that compare to comparables on the lots today?

Gas guzzling? Most of the guys at work have 1/2 ton 4x4s and most of the newer ones are getting 20-25MPG, that is as good as my 2008 Taurus X or any of the "medium" or large SUVs.
