GN--pick up to med. duty truck

I agree. Get a used 450 or a 550 4x4 and get the biggest gooseneck you can get for it. Forget the 4800. I have one and I use it for its' intended purpose- hauling heavy loads off road in tight spots and towing a backhoe around for local excavating jobs.

I'm guessing this machine you want to buy weighs ~7 tons. Perfect weight for a 450/550 4x4. My 4800 4x4 is about 3 times as heavy duty as a 450/550, but a 450/550 is a pleasure to drive in "bobtail" mode. You can easily find a used crewcab and take the kids out with you, use it just like a pickup. ;) That's all they are, they're just a beefed-up pickup with a little heavier frame and a bigger rear axle, springs & brakes. The rest of the truck is basically identical to a F-350 dually.

My 4800 is a beast that hauls 10 + ton loads around into places a 4x2 can't go. It's over 250HP, but 250 HP is slow pulling 35,000lbs around or a backhoe. It's great for taking a real beating hauling broken concrete, demo junk, etc. but I wouldn't want to drive it around empty more than a few miles. I've had as much as 12 tons on it and it handles it OK, but it's slow going.
