Go out in the storm or wait till its over

It was a freaky 72 degrees here yesterday and windy after being 30 deg the night before. Every piece of metal and brick was sweating. I'd rather have the snow.

I would definatly have done it several times. Im still at work digging out eveyone else. My wife sent me pictures on my phone we had a drift over 5 feet tall and extending I would say over 30 feet out from the garage door. Ive only got a blade and It might as well have been in the scrap pile. Had to call the neighbor with his loader to come dig it out. she told me it took him over an hour to dig and move all the snow 50 ft. from where it had drifted. I know its too late now but If i were home i would have been goin out in it every few hours.

On a side note I hope everyone was safe and stayed home and got out ok without too much trouble

I use to attack the snow in sections, that was when the equipment I had was "marginal" to the effort..

I have since acquired snow removal equipment that can handle anything, so I wait until the weather has abated and the sun is out before I abuse myself clearing it off.

What size tractor is everyone using that makes it necessary to plow several times during a storm? !

I am useing a ford 1900 4x4 with a 6' front blade and a 6'rear blade. One reason I keep going out is that I have to be at work the next day. When we get large amounts of snow The company I work for hauls the snow away. I run the 644h loader to load the trucks. Most of the time we start loading snow about 3 or 4 AM before most of the idiots get out.

Ummmm ya that worked out well....

A little late in posting but during the latest blizzard I plowed at 10:30pm and then again at 5:30am and it didn't make any difference. My L3400 and 6.5' Myers couldn't push the 2' to 4' drifts, it took forever. That said my neighbor guy that has a plow on his diesel pickup said he had a heck of a time plowing too. Regardless, I'm looking for a rear blower to add to the implement fleet. I figure between the blower and the Myers I should be able to handle whatever comes my way.

a couple of years ago, i looked out at around 2am cause they reported a really bad storm coming in. we had maybe 16-18" ON THE GROUND, WIND HOWLING and bitter cold. i chickened out with my old open station jd870, and waited to morning. in the am....we had 36" on the ground. wife couldnt get out to go to work....whole town shut down. it took me over 12 hours to get it all cleared. since then, ill go out if it ever looks that bad again. of course, with my new heated cab.....im looking forward to it.....bring it on baby   :D;)

Much as I like running equipment, I personally prefer to wait for the snow to stop coming down so I don't have to do the job more than once.

40MPH winds in a blizzard with no cab doesn't bother me in the slightest as good insulated boots, snowmobile suit, goggles, and a knit pullover/face mask keep me nice and toasty no matter what Mother Nature throws at me. Heck, if you have one of those fancy helmets with the stereo radio, you can have a grand old time.

It really depends on the conditions...I doubt any of you have a hard and fast rule.
It also depends on your equipment. With my old 670 and 790 (no chains or ballast box the first 7 years), I normally was pushing snow when it got to 6-8 inches (more or less, depending if it was wet and heavy or dry, fluffy) even if it hadn't stopped. Common sense prevailed, of course and I wasn't out in any brisk winds.
With the 4400 (open station), chains and ballast box, I'm OK with waiting as I'm confident this machine can push 12-15" and dig out heavier drifts.
It's not the snow that bothers me...it's the wind.

Before my snow blower I would go out before it got to deep and hope it didn't drift in to bad. Now with the 3pt blower I just wait till it stops and clear it once.
