To lots of folks on here, this is NOT just another day to BBQ and drink beer. It's for me and those others, the day that I put aside to honor those that I left behind on that patrol that put me in the hospital and disabled for the rest of my days. They are now on a wall in DC and in cemetaries scattered across this country. Yes, the one's with the white marble headstones. So to them and the millions of others that have given the ultimate sacrifice for THEIR country and MINE............Thank you......I know God has blessed YOU....Dennis

Well said. I am thankful for them and you.

May we remember today, and always. Thanks for the reminder, Dennis, and thank you for your sacrifice too.

Though there is some controversy about this letter, it is still one of the most beautiful "notes" I have seen written (can a guy say that?)
I also think the armed forces for their sense of duty, that have died abroad and those that have died stateside.

"Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln"
