Mom's side of the family go back generations dairy farming... never more than about 35 cows.

Very country and pretty much raise what you ate...

Asthma and allergies were unknown...

I manage rentals in the SF Bay Area and half the kids are on some kind of inhaler or allergy meds...

It does make a person wonder as to extremes.

Also, most are extremely fastidious when it comes to germs... everything from hand sanitizers to strong spray disinfectants... none of that on the farm... sure, you washed up before coming to supper and Saturday was bath night before going to Sunday church...

Manure; particularly horse manure, is a sure place to find the Clostridium bacteria.

If there had been a vaccine available, I'd probably have been jabbed for that too.

You were, if you ever had a Tetanus vaccination.

Similar family background/experience here. Whenever I visited the farm, I drank un-pasteurized raw milk, as did my father's generations before - if you ran a clean dairy, you drank what you made. Today, you'd be looking at charges. Progress.

I didn't move around as much as an army brat, but by the time I finished high school, I'd been to a number of schools and knew a lot of people. Out of all those young people/teens back then, only 3 had asthma.

There are many studies, from many aspects, showing that isolation from outdoor natural activity is harmful. Makes sense, as we evolved over a long period of time, with high exposure to natural elements. Without going full tinfoil-hat drift, I believe that there are also negative vectors in the foodstream now, that weren't present when I was young.

I've been to Texas, and Arizona, so I understand why A/C is mandatory there today. What I do shake my head over is what I see up here. The same people here who whinge on about how Cold the Winter is, on the first nice Spring day where it is warm out they will be driving around with all their vehicle windows up, and the A/C on.

Vehicles commonly have cabin-air filters today. A large # of people today spend a great deal of time moving between HVAC controlled homes/vehicles/offices/shopping centres/restaurants , with consequently very little outdoor time.

When we ran something in a foot, we soaked foot in wash pan of kerosene, never went to Dr. unless dying.

Walt Conner

We did the same. Ran a straight pin in my big toe; Mom had to get a pair of pliers to pull it out. Spent half a day with my foot in a pan of kerosene. Mom's sister got her finger chopped off...but for a piece of skin...holding a piece kindling for my uncle (yea, I know, but they were just stupid kids). Grand ma wrapped it up with a mix of sugar and turpentine; no infection and it healed perfectly, but for the fact that it was crooked the rest of her life.

My mom told the story of a city kid, he was kin to us some how, that was sick all of the time. His family came to visit and the old folks were talking and he was quiet for a bit and they went looking for him. They found him eating out of the slop bucket, food scraps headed for the hogs. After that he was as healthy as anyone. Mom would shake her head and say, he must have gotten something in that slop that he needed. Makes you think. Ed

It's called, "fermented food". If you want to live a good long healthy life, look into it.

I had asthma as a young child when we lived in town. Allergic to two things, plant dust and animal dust. At age 6 my folks bought a small farm a couple of miles out of town. That was the end of the asthma. A case of kill or cure?
