Going to replace hot water tank. Need some advice

once everything is up to temp its about twice the cycles as the old boiler did but the boiler had 500 lbs of iron to mitigate that. But its 95% efficient and the old beast was probably 50%? You could burn your self on the flue pipe.

When things are cold or when running the turbonics mvb fan coil it will suck the heat right out of the ex-changers cycling the unit more often. The reason for turbonics mvb fan coil was because in floor heat is not instant... and when the wife is cold... well you get the point, happy wife = happy life

for adjusting the temp of the first floor loops, I just did what tekmar does, added another pump that kicks on and off feeding the manifold loop with hot water until it reaches desired temp. At first i didn't do this and the bedroom temps would over shoot its desired temps by 10 degrees during warmer days. Oh, i also put a temp sensor outside and pull the current temperatures from wunderground API.

the old boiler had a tekmar mixing controller which does exactly the same thing for the basement in slab zone @ 100f and cost $500.... raspberry pi does it for $35  and I can pick what ever temps I want!

Hydronic systems have many loops and many pumps

you are using 7 pumps? why not zone valves?

only 5 pumps, 2 normal zone valves and the 10 port manifold has 10 thermostatic actuators that sit on top of the manifold.

link to manifold please?

I'm back on this project again. I'm looking at this one: Rheem 9.5 GPM Natural Gas High Efficiency Indoor Tankless Water Heater-ECOH2DVLN-1 - The Home Depot

It should be large enough. I have 2 and 1/2 bath, split entry. There are 3 of us living there. The tankless water heater I am looking at is 9.5 GPM.

My plumbing is all 1/2" in this house. Could this affect the performance of the tankless? I just had my natural gas installed 2 weeks ago. I ran 1" pipe from the meter to the furnace room where the new tankless heater will be installed. It's piped into a 1" manifold. I can tap off of that using 3/4" csst to the unit. I would think that would be enough volume for the gas. I can vent it directly outside from there.

Here is the old electric 80 gallon hot water tank.

That will work fine on all fronts except the 1/2” water pipes for everything. The water heater doesn’t care (it has a flow meter) but you will experience the temp fluctuations while showering- just like you do now.

With the water heater I have now, I don't have any heat fluctuation when showering or haven't noticed anyhow. Also, this is a smaller house and the kitchen and main bath are right above the hot water tank, so there is not much of a run for the water lines.

Then the 1/2” lines shouldn’t be an issue. Have fun with the project!
