Good news! Last week-end the results were announced from the Los Angeles County Fair Olive Oil Competition. We did pretty good.
Probalby everyone here knows already since I have explained it several times, but just in case. Olives are like any other fruit, in that the varietal of the tree and the environment in which it is grown in provides a uique flavor. Just like apples, a granny smith apple tastes different than a golden delicious. Olvies are the same way.
This year I took a chance and sent in 4 different olive oils. I think it is around $100 per entry plus the cost of shipping from France to LA so it is an investment/risk. In 2006 I sent in one oil, our blend the AOC and we won a Gold, and BEST IN SHOW. In 2007 I sent in 2 oils and again we won a Gold a Silver and BEST IN SHOW. So this eyar I decided to send in 4.
We won a
Gold Medal for our Bouteillan
Gold Medal for our Grossane
Silver Medal for our AOC (our blend of oils)
Bronze Medal for our Aglandau.
I thought it would be a little much to win BEST IN SHOW 3 years in a row so we did not win that this year but were sure happy to win what we did.
Anyway in the biggest olive oil competition put on by Der Feinschmecker Magazine our AOC was selected as the BEST OIL IN FRANCE. Plus we were the only producer to have 4 oils selected. AOC and Bouteillan were selected as being in the TOP 30 in the World and Grossane and Aglandau were in the Top 250. In that Der Feionschmecker competition they fly in and pay the expenses for a full week of tasting by top notch people in the business. From Italy there were 2 PhD's in Olive Oil, from Spain a person who works for the government with an expert job in olive oil. Another from Spain an agricultutal engineer, and also some from Greece i cna't remember thier exact jobs but is was on par with the others. To put that competiton in perspective they did not award any medals at all to any oil from Portugal. France won 16 spots in the Top 250 out of 850 olive oils judged and Mas Des Bories won 4 out of the 16, and 2 in the Top 30.
In the LA competition the judges are not probably in the same league as the Der Feinschmecker competition which is understandable, as California is in it's infancy growing their olive oil industry.
So we are pretty happy with the competitions, we did pretty good with two different groups of judges and judges with differnt backgrounds.
You know those wins in Los Angeles really help with our USA sales.
I don't want to be to self promoting here on TBN but after I post a win like this people usually do ask, so I might as well provide the info and save everyone the trouble.
You can get all our oils from Larry's Brown Deer market, Steve Ehlers, which is just outside of Milwaukee http://www.larrysmarket.com/ they ship orders.
If you are in the west a really great new customer of ours is Liberty Heights Fresh in Salt Lake City http://www.libertyheightsfresh.com/ he has a lot of Bouteillan to offer. We mailed him out samples and the Bouteillan was his favorite. He's got Bouteillan.
www.iGouremt.com just picked up their pallet of oil yesterday so give it a few days until they put it back up on their website. I know right now they don't show it becasue they are out of inventory next week when they check in this pallet they will have oil.
i won't be doing any more "self promoting" on TBN, if people want to know where they can get it they can always pm me. I just add it in when I am fortuante enough to be able to share some good news because I know people will be wondering.
I hope the oil turns out good this year. The olives right now are on the trees and itty bitty. We will know in a few weeks what kind of crop we will get, hopefully if all else goes well for the rest of the growing season.
