Goldenrod Water Block Filters Anybody Use Them

/ Goldenrod Water Block Filters Anybody Use Them #11
I have just ordered a new Bulk Tank Fuel pump with Goldenrod water block filter. My other tank just has their straight 10 micron filter. I intend to change that to a water block as well with the 17 micron filtration. I am told, it will absorb up to 1/2 cup of water and then it will restrict the flow. Obviously, I should make sure that the suction pipe is no where near the bottom of the tank.

Customer service suggested that some people use both filters in line, but I want to avoid the cost and more importantly, don't want to slow the pump down more then the one filter does already

Does anybody have experience with these?

Seems to me 1/2 a cup isn't very much water. How often does one need to change the filter?

What happens when the thing freezes? Never thought to ask them that. I called them back. Funny (well not really). Customer service didn't know. The engineers didn't know. Eventually half the company was conferenced into my call! Firstly it's never come up, so I will just make believe that it isn't an issue. I didn't know, but it's a common technology to put Corn Starch particles in the Filter that swell with the introduction of water. Who Knew?

Is 17 micron filtration enough? How much is that anyway?

If you are having a problem with tank condensation contaminating you fuel with water, by all means use a water block filter. If you just have some water in your fuel (a table spoon in 50 gallons) then treat you fuel with a good diesel additive and just use a 10 micron. The best of all worlds is to use both filters in series but, in my opinion, you only need the water block if you have a serious water condensation problem. I think protecting the injector pump from dirty fuel is a more prevalent issue than condensation for most people.

You also want to make sure that water contamination is not coming from the vehicle tank. Try to keep them full as much as possible to minimize water contamination.

I have a Goldenrod water block on my 109 gallon tank I have on my trailer and it has been great. I used to have a lot of water in fuel problems before installing it. The first one plugged during the second tank full. Then I checked around and discovered that supplier has a problem - rusty underground tank suspected due to numerous complaints. Changed suppliers and now have to change about once per 500 gallons. Have not had a tractor stoppage due to water in the fuel since I installed the Goldenrod. I recommend their bowl wrench for changing. I cracked the plastic housing on my first one. Later I was looking at another farm supply store and they had the bowl wrenches stocked next to the filter elements.

Not sure if it will work with your tank design, but when you set up the tank pad, add a 1-2" bias towards the end opposite of the pump.

Water heads to the lowest point as it accumulates.
Simply dropping a siphon hose to that end and racking off a quart now and then to check for water takes 10Min.
If you get water, rack off a couple gallons and burn brush.

Wix makes a water trap filter with a drain, and they work real well.
Just remember to drain off any water in the fall before things get too cold, or you're stuck swapping filters.
