Good post CurlyDave.

Maybe these fellas were skunks, you will find out eventually. Find out first and get a read on what they say. Tell them politely that you are upset because the situation is as you expected nor what you thought was discussed. Judge their reaction - you will know if they are genuinely concerned and whether or not it was dishonesty. If it was me, and I was the wood guy and I had made a mistake I would ask you what I could do to fix it with my apologies etc.

Try and make nice with the neighbours otherwise though if you can. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Good luck!

You could always charge for, or lease for access. Paying hunters usually will protect their investment...... KEY WORD "usually"

You allowed them a little, they took a lot. They took advantage of your good nature, sounds like you've made up your mind to keep them off the land. Once they realize you mean business I don't think you will have many problems. Doesn't sound like any of them were your friend so no loss there. Put your cable up and post with permission only.

Thanks for the feedback.

No, we are not considered "city slickers" since we do live and brought up in a rural area. Maybe outsiders - but does not mean the "locals" can do what they want when we are not there. I fully understand that I have no control over who comes in or out when we are not there. I know that there are people hunting deer there, but most of these people do not leave a trace. and like I mentioned, I can care less if people take a few deer out of there.

The problem here is that these guys - even though are experiencing "tough times" with the economy like a lot of us, are the same guys who ***** about having to put in a 30 hour work week. Meanwhile, my family has worked very, very hard to own this property and leave it to their children to enjoy - currently I am working two jobs to help pay taxes. Some of these locals think because they lived there forever, they have rights to everything, and "outsiders" are the rich people with all the money.

I was very friendly and honest with these guys. They must have worked something out with another group of people to move all of that wood, and I am sure they are selling it to the "weekenders" for an outrageuos price. I grew up in one of these small towns and I know how some of these "skunks" think.

The day when I ask favor of one of these guys to plow the road during winter and he gave me attitude about doing it - - I knew something was "funny" about these guys.

I am just so aggrevated b/c the logger specifically piled the wood at one location so me and my family would not have to bust our asses to pick wood up throughout the woods.

CurlyDave, I like your approach. Thanks for some very interesting points.

I also have several properties and can no way "guard" them all. So I develop neighbourly relationships, and when there are problems, I re-establish them. it takes work and sometimes I am taken advantage of. But I stay calm and ultimately have neighbors who protect and watch the place.

.

That says it all to me. They have knowingly stolen from you. Bar them out like your thread title says.

Unfortunate.

I know what you mean, we run an inert waste landfill for 3 companies. They want to let their plant foremen to hunt out there on the 80 acres we have fenced in and run like a park. Everyone expt one man has screwed up royally. At first we handed out A KEY an a list of the people with a key that only them could be there. Id go in and someon would have been all over the equipment trying to start it. or get a request to leave a key in such so playing on a dozer or scraper or aour tractor could be used.
That would be dealt with then Id come in on the weekend to dry up a haul road or to mechanic and there would be 5 or 6 folks that didnt have permission to be there or have a key. I came in once and someone had shot a deer and was too lazy to drag it back. So they happen to have a key to fit my personal hyster 50 fork lift. I found it about 40 feet down a haul road stuck. We changed the locks and again we were asked by one of the owners to let his buddy in. Had some angle Iron stolen from the rack at the shop, and the cardinal rule on atvs there broken only stay on the haul roads not in the cuts or fills and definatly off slopes. I have some nice personal deck furniture we set out on the porch of the office for lunch time and one day found it around the pond there the lead men had a party and had a beer bash 2 got fired over that for having beer on the company property.
We Had 3 dogs out there and they werent to be touched. The last guy we let hunt out there only promised that he and his 12 year old would be out there. We came up missing out rat terrier there the same weekend he and his brotherinlaw roade 4 wheelers allday after killing a deer. The worse part he lied about being 2 loads of folks there. We found a city of Belmont fire fighter radio out there. The foreman told us it fell off his 4 wheeler then changed the story to he borrowed his BIL's wheeler to get a deer out. and that noone else was in there at the time. The kicker was one of the neighbors that we have a right of way to enter the area is a Belmont city officer he saw the 2 trucks and turned around and by that time they had locked the gate and headed into the site. Plus his 3 different sets of boot prints he left. We now tell the owners if someone wants to hunt that the EPA really enforces the workers only rule which they do. This last episode caused me to have to shake out 75 straw bales by hand on the damaged slopes.
I think dad has learned his lesson on trusting folks because 90 percent of the time they want to abuse the privelige. THe last guy dad said what bothered him it wasnt the fact he had his BIL there butthe fact he lied to dad about only being one person there.

I can tell your angry and maybe rightfully so. I was not there to know how things were discussed and I have no idea how they interpreted what you told them. What I can tell you that you did wrong was to allow other people to cut firewood on your land before you cut it yourself if you wanted it yourself. Firewood is in very high demand and when someone gets a new chunk of woods to cut in they will cut hard and fast before anyone else does. If you had more then one guy cutting in there (did you allow multiple people to have "some" wood?) then they would be working even harder to make sure they got what they wanted before the other guy took it all. Bottom line is "you" shouldn't have allowed "anyone" to cut this wood if you wanted it. You messed up regardless to how others interpretted what you allowed them.

Looking back on it what you should have done is told them they could have firewood on shares. They cut you a load for every load they take since you wanted the wood yourself.

Good luck.

Yeah - maybe I did not communicate properly to these guys, regardless - I cannot believe that someone would have the nerve to help themselves to that much wood. I would never do it, it is just not right - even if the landowner does not burn wood. You just use common sense.

Now I know why a lot of folks in this area do no favors for anyone, and, can get pretty mean and rotton when it comes to thier property. And now I also know why a relative of mine, who does not burn wood, had has property logged 10 years ago - - let absolutely no one on the property to get firewood, he let all of wood sit in the woods and rot.

I am nice to all of the neighbors - these guys are not neighbors. Actually the neighbors were the ones who warned me about letting folks take wood off my lot. And, I am not going to be nice to these guys, especially when it comes to my property and money (taxes).

I guess this will be a lesson learned. Next time I will spell it out, if you want wood, this is how much you can take, because obviously some folks these days lack a lot of common sense.

Everyone is different. I know a lot of guys who will let people take as much wood as they want. Others keep it for themselves and others leave it to rot in the woods as that is actually good for the woods and wildlife. I have no use for firewood, I always enjoyed cutting it though but I just did it to fill my grandfathers barn. I haven't cut any firewood in a couple years though since I hurt my back but we have enough woods of our own to not have to worry about finding wood to cut. When we bought the one 45 acre parcel it was logged off recently and we let our friends cut what ever they wanted from it as the loggers left a lot piled at the landing that was not good enough to take in to the mill. It was easy cutting for them and it cleared the landing for us.
