I need tools to clean up where the tractor-mounted rotary mower can't fit. Often the weeds are knee-high or more before I get to it. Trimming is done only a few times per year, more to keep fire danger down than for aesthetics. So I need something heavier than just lawn equipment. It looks like battery powered gear has evolved to where this is a reasonable alternative to gas, for limited-scope projects.

I need self-propelled. Long ago I had a 5(?) hp big string trimmer on wheels and pushing that on this rough, hilly ground was exhausting. Plus it needed the string (tied, not spooled) replaced every 10 minutes. So I replaced that with a gas mower, still not a solution because it wasn't self propelled.

There must have been a thread in this forum about the various brands of battery garden equipment but I haven't found it.

I have Ryobi 18v shop tools and chainsaw, they work fine. But the matching string trimmer and leaf blower are wimpy, and the polesaw feels like the pole will break every time I use it. So I don't need to keep with Ryobi.

Advice?

We have the Ryobi 40 Volt mower. It works well for smaller yards. The Ryobi electric string trimmer stripped out it's drive and was replaced with another one.

I just bought a mid sized 2 stroke Echo 266 because I don't feel when push comes to shove the Ryobi has enough rough cutting ability for me.

I have the M18 quick lock pole saw/string trimmer.
Been happy with both. Need at least 3 batteries for me to do each section with the trimmer, about 2 x 150' x 6' wide slope and trench.
Not sure if it's up to your task as I run the 3 batteries and do the next 150' section some other day.

Pole saw, use a lot on fallen branches and thick bush stems, works fine up to 12" or so Ash so far.
Oregon 10" bar/chain.

The trimmer has the head where you feed in the line from one side and turn the head to wind it, really like that.

But know nothing about their M18 mowers.

I have a lot of M12/M18 tools so....

For ripping out the berry brambles I have a Stihl FS110 with a renegade blade. The trimmer , even with .095 won't cut those.

Hard to beat a Stihl or Echo trimmer with a blade on them but you live in Kalifornia so if you want one better buy it soon as I hear your Governor is outlawing gas powered anythings.
