Good deal on Woods Batwing?

/ Good deal on Woods Batwing? #31
Im just having a hard time not seeing the 7040 not being able to pull the bat-wing fine. We use a 12ft Woods behind are 7040 and it takes some really thick goatweeds or something to bog it down.If your running in a really high gear yes i can see it but I usually just mow in 4 low.I use the 12ft woods behind my 5040 5040 and ds1440.JPG and it does fine.I dont run my tractors wide open threw the pasture, just sit back and enjoy my seat time.

*I would rather run slower with bigger shredder, then faster with a 6ft*
As far as the price sounds kinda high, should be able to find new deals around 9+ range....

There is a big difference between a finish mower and a rotary cutter (bush hog) and an 8' mower and a 15' one.

The general rule of thumb is 5hp per foot. Even if you pushed that down to 4 hp per ft, a 15' hog would required 60 hp. 40 hp for a 15 footer would be less than 3 hp per foot. Very likely to be a disappointment for the vast majority of people.

I'm running 85hp PTO and a 15' bogs it down sometimes.

Ken

If woods says 45 PTO HP will run the BW180, then I wouldn't have much trouble believing 62PTO HP wouldn't be enough. I think there'd be a lot of p*ssed-off tractor owners that ordered Woods batwings only to have to return them to the dealer because their 45-70HP tractor won't run them....

Maybe your blades are dull or you go too fast. I cut some unreal sh*t with my 8' mower. 6-8 feet tall and 1" thick at base isn't uncommon and the 7040 never bogs down. I know 15' is almost twice as wide, but I'm not going to cut that kind of tall stuff with this mower, and again, as I've stated before in this thread, this mower is more for a bigger tractor I'm buying in the spring. I would only use it behind my 7040 for lighter pasture clipping.

sounds like a good deal. I have an old old alamo 15 ft batwing. I think it has terrain king on the side. The old manual says 35 hp to use it but the highway dept. always used 100 hp tractors. On mine I use an old case propane 811 B , and a kioti dk55c. They will cut my fields but heavy brush will sometimes load it. I think these mowers have a lot of spinning energy in the blades, etc. That act like a large flywheel to cut with less power. It sounds like a good deal for a fairly good quality unit. If I am trailblazing new places I just use an 8 footer first time.

yep.. big difference in capable and ideal.

a machine that can cut some blacktops using 40 pto hp would likely bog down that 40-ish hp tractor it it hit 1' of lush grass.

PS.. I'd rather cut 5' stemmy weeds than 2' of lush grass.

as i said to the other poster. i believe there is a range of operation that starts at 'possible' and goes thru 'ideal'.

possible is at the low end. ideal is at the high end.

I can grab the pto shaft on my jd1517 batwing and grunt alot and get it to roll over by hand.

thus it's possible for me to spin it..

that doesn't mean i'm ready to yoke up to it and cut my pasture ;)

Yes, I definitely noticed that. Lush grass that loaded down the M9540 in spring was a breeze to mow in September.

hearing all those batwing prices makes me feel good about the 2000$ I paid for my jd1517 wing.

As for the weeds vs grass.. yep.. huge difference.. 7' tall ragweed and dog fennel is nothing for 5th gear on my 95hp tractor. jump that to 3' lush grass and I have to run in 3rd

I've found cheaper deals, but I want a unit with pans, chains, aircraft tires and a coat of factory paint.

I can find plenty of rust buckets on lammy tires with no pans or chains for $5,000-ish.

Trying to make a deal with seller today/tomorrow. I'm not terribly optimistic.
