A few months ago I was looking into buying a waterproof camera for a cruise we went on in February. On one of the stops we where going to take a dive lesson and then spend an hour on a reef. After reading the reviews on Amazon, it was pretty obvious that most cameras out there disappointed. I think Canon and Nikon had the most positive reviews and each one of those where in the $350 range. We talked about it, but decided not to spend that much money on a one time thing that we didn't even know if we would like it or not. Instead I bought two disposable 35mm cameras from Walmart. One for Karen and one for me and while over half of the pics where junk, and most of the others where just ok, we played the odds and got a couple there we liked.

Eddie, many years ago I purchased one of those Minolta Weathermatic 35mm underwater cameras...still have it. I found the quality of the pictures to be very much dependent upon water clarity and the amount of light available, the flash was next to useless. Reading your post made me wonder if the picture quality of your disposables was because of the same reasons.

We where only in ten feet of water, so there was plenty of light. The problem with the bad pictures was that some of them where fuzzy or just not of anything. They are hard to aim and hold steady. A nicer digital camera would have probably solved a lot of this, but for what we where doing, it was just more then we wanted to spend for this. After doing it, neither of us where all that thrilled with it and probably wont do it again, so for us, it was a good decision not to buy a waterproof digital camera.
