Good digital SLR camera?

Otherwise known as the "Digital Rebel XSi" A very nice camera from what I have heard.
One of the benefits of it is that it uses a SD/SDHC card instead of a CF card. SD/SDHC cards are easier to find, store and find someplace to download than a CF card.

One dog got our current camera, and have to admit, almost pulled out the Ruger My own stupid fault for leaving it out though.

Old camera was a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 and loved it for it's size.

We have an Olympus E410 that we bought at Sams Club for around $300. It came with 2 lenses. We are very pleased with the photo's that it produces.

Much like tractors, really need to know what you wan to do, and your budget.

There are nice "kits" by many manufacturers. But, lenses are entry level. Glass is as important as the camera body,, if not moreso. Entry kits will work fine. If you do more than average typical photography, you may want better lenses, or lenses in a particular range; ie portiats, macro, low light..

I really like Nikon. Nikon has always had excelent glass, at least in thier semi-pro and pro versions.

Nikon just sent me some spam but I did notice they had new Coolpix cameras. Looking very quickly at the specs on the DMC-F27 that the dog ate, , the Coolpix P90, P100, and P6000 or maybe the Coolpix L series, look similar, Digital Cameras from Nikon

The big photo trade show, PMA is this month. I am guessing these are the models being announced for the show. Which is a bit surprising since they have made these announcements at the show in the past. Maybe this means Nikon is going to announce some stuff I might be interested in having.

I just have to wonder about the actual picture quality difference between a $500 camera and a $1200 camera in MY hands. Looked at some SLR's today, and big difference in size as well compared to the one I "lost".

I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions, it has given me more to look at.

As for price, I could plunk down whatever I really wanted, just wondering if for someone like myself the difference in price would really be worth it (added that the price difference can also go towards a new safe).

Looking, seems like the DMC-F235k replaced my older model. Actually looks nice, and what I'm beating my head over is that it can be bought for under $450

I still have my OLD Nikon FE laying around somewhere at my dads, and in my younger days I enjoyed "playing" with photography, particularly the composition of the actual picture. On that note, I have a feeling that a "plain jane" Nikon 3000 would suffice.

However, there is something to be said for having a small camera and not having to change the lens all the time depending on what kind of "shooting" you want to take and just take a decent quick picture that you can download and save.

Currently, the only camera I have in the house other than my phone is this one (my dad didn't bring down my camera but his!). Not sure where to get film for it

You do any editing of digital images? If so look for one that gives you the most mega-pixels and RAW vs. jpeg,jpg mode.

We shoot with a nikon D50. It does the job. Dated but hanging in there.

My "good" camera is a Nikon D90 for which I have 3 Nikkor lenses; 10-24mm, 18-200mm, and 70-300mm. It's a great camera. I couldn't be happier with my choice but it may not be right for someone else. There are plenty of great choices for a whole lot less money.

I have a Canon SX10 IS that I got for Christmas in 08', and while it may not be a DSLR, it takes very nice pictures. It's more of a high end point and shoot camera with a lot of extra features to make it appeal to a DSLR user. Now I believe Canon has the SX20 IS out as well, which has the same amount of zoom (20x optical), but it has 12.1 mega pixels instead of 10. The one reason I chose the SX10 IS, (at the time), over any other camera on the market was because of it's ability to take very clear pictures at full zoom. Here's an example:

The target is the white boat in the center of the first picture, and the second picture is of the target fully zoomed in on. I should also note that these pictures were taken through a window, and I did a slight bit of post processing on them in Photoshop, but I think they still make the point.
