Good Motor to replace a KT17 SI?

Easiest way to drain fuel on this machine is to pull fuel line off carb and pull it down below the engine. The only other option is to reach up behind the left rear wheel and disconnect the line where it exits the tank. That's also where the fuel filter is (worth checking). If engine not cranking then test then test the starter. The tech manual has a procedure for checking coil resistance without pulling the engine. Probably worth investing a few bucks on the tech manual before you get too far.

Thanks, I saw the fuel line, and I guess I'll see about the starter, I heard that you have to pull the motor to get to the starter??

Starter is definitely in a bad spot on this machine. First time I replaced mine I pulled the engine. Second time I replaced it (after making the mistake of buying a Chinese starter vs Kohler part) I just loosened the engine mounts and jacked up that side of the engine far enough to get to both bolts. Busted my knuckles but saved pulling the whole engine out.

If you have a multimeter you can test the starter primary and secondary windings without pulling it out. Tech manual tells you how many ohms you should get on each winding. I've got that book in my shop somewhere....

Ok, got more progress on it today, pulled the rear sheet metal off and cleaned it, got the battery, and found the backing plate for one of the brakes, The right hand side brake has some problems, gonna clean the seat up tomorrow, drain the fuel out of the tank, can I use 10w30 motor oil in it, instead of Turf gard?? Not sure of the difference... It really needs to be pressure washed, and my grandfather wants to basically strip it down after we get it running, and repaint it! Also need to get new lines for it, at the hardware store.. Probably get some of the decals too, and fuel and amp gauges.....

Ive been looking online but havent found anything. Can I get that from JD? i drained the fuel, it was red.lol!!! Need to get the line, and also brake shoes from JD?? when i get the coil, i'll try to get it to start!! Thanks for everyones help so far!!!! Figured out how to put pics on!
