Buying Advice Good ole South Carolina

I hope I'm in the right forum.I just wanted to inform all my friends in S.C.That you can buy a $30,000.00 Lexus and pay only $300.00 dollars sales tax yep S C has a tax cap on new autos,but don't buy a used 1987 yanmar! I did and just got a tax bill with penalties and interest totaling over $700.00 I assumed a tractor for farm use was tax excempt but no sir!I had no idea at the time of purchase taxes were due! However if you sell a product produced with your tractor its tax excempt?I don't get it I produce veggies and etc for my family.I guess S C wants me to sell them then buy them back? Gotta pay don't want tax lien on prop.Hurray for SC

How about this, you sell me your vegetables from the dirt ripped by your Yanmar, ship them to me, I'll write you a check. You an buy those same vegetables back for a 50% increase (for my troubles). Your a Farmer now! :thumbsup:

Don't feel bad, I have encountered the same thing buying ATVs and dirt bikes...no cap on the tax. I went round and round with state government on this, the tax people say it isn't a motor vehicle therefore the tax doesn't cap. Ok if it isn't a motor vehicle then I can operate my ATV or dirt bike on the street and not be charged with operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, since it isn't a motor vehicle. Highway Department says it IS a motor vehicle/ Tax Department says no it ISN'T.... :confused2:

Thats crazy. Here in TX if you claim it for the farm then no tax at all, tractor parts ect. New or used.:thumbsup:

All you have to do is file form ST-8F with the state dept. of revenue at the time of purchase.

You must realize that the state of SC is very broke right now. I know of multiple people receiving bills with penalty and interest for tax evasion.

Just wait until they start going after everyone for internet and mail order purchases.

That "farm" exemption is a little tricky- you must farm for sale, if you just have a "farm" for your own enjoyment then you can't get the exemption...
I was asked about it when I bought my Kubota- could have lied but I paid the sales tax.

From SC tax code-
Farm machinery and their replacement parts and attachments, used in planting, cultivating or harvesting farm crops, including
bulk coolers (farm dairy tanks) used in the production and preservation of milk on dairy farms, and machines used in the
production of poultry and poultry products on poultry farms, when such products are sold in the original state of production or
preparation for sale. This exemption does not include automobiles or trucks;

Well if buntrock qualifies it will be interesting to see if he gets anywhere...
I paid excess property tax on an RV for almost 10 years before finding out it was mis-appraised in their books. Asked about a refund- answer - nope you only have 30 days to appeal...as said "good ole SC"

very true!!

They have proposed repealling the property tax relief that we get from the state on our property taxes. This will almost double everyones tax if it happens.

They want to start taxing groceries again.

They are trying to raise the vehicle sales tax limit to $1200 from the current $300.

As I said before the state is very broke right now!!
