I needed an oil filter for my Kubota yesterday so I drove to my not so local Kubota dealer. My wife, since she knew the dealer was near some decent antique shops, came with me. We wasted most of the afternoon, and with both darkness and increasing snowfall coming our way, we drove home.

By the time we were nearly home it was really coming down, with wind gusts of up to 50mph creating near whiteout conditions. There was an SUV in front of us creeping along, so we decided to take the back way past the Trapp Family Lodge to our house. Bad move. We passed the lodge and started downhill, noticing a LOT of people walking uphill toward the lodge. As we crossed a crest we saw the reason -- at least 20 cars blocking the road and another dozen in the ditches with their lights aimed at crazy angles.

Plan B: back up the hill, past the lodge, and back to the pavement. Around by the high school and up Luce Hill. Only there was a long line of folks blocked by a police officer directing traffic. So we pulled into the other lane and went around the cars, waving to the officer who waved back (funny how they know who lives where in a small town!) and proceeded up the hill toward our house. Had to dodge at least thirty cars stopped dead in the road, but between those wonderful Haakappellita snow tires and the awesome traction of the Subaru, we had absolutely no trouble weaving in and out of stalled vehicles on our way home.

At the last curve we weaved our way through a huge traffic jam, stopped to check our mailbox, then drove the last half mile home without incident. Brewed up some coffee and took the ATV back down to the traffic jam to spread some cheer and make sure everyone was okay. They were fine, just stuck in the slush.

I've heard folks swear by all season radials, BFGs, Goodyears, Michelins etc in winter conditions, but the only cars moving in the slush last night had all wheel drive and good snow tires.

You got that right Pete. Those Haakappellita's are a good tire. My wife has four on her Dodge. The only bad thing is she thinks she's driving a tank now!! So when she get's stuck she's really stuck. Glad you all got home safely. Did you find any good antique's?
Take care and say Hi to the pack.

Hey Al! I'm running studded Coopers on the truck and while they're not Haaks, I sure hope they get me home thru the nasty stuff! As for the antiques, we've been looking for a full sized bed. Found one yesterday that looked like something out of Ghostbusters! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif 7 1/2 feet tall with carvings all over the place...even lion's heads for the posts! But aside from the fact that our bedroom ceiling isn't that high, and that the bed would probably give me nightmares (or fits of hysterical laughing), the cost was $4000!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But it was much lower to the ground than our present bed, so the older dogs would have no trouble crawling into bed with us on those cold winter nights. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i don't think you should have any trouble with the coopers in the snow, all i run is cooper retreads, thier cheap, and they work good. the small block coopers seem to work the best in the snow and ice though.

We found that out when our son was at the law school in South Royalton. He still runs them on his cars here in Western New York. They are a great tire for the winter.

Wow Pete! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This is the second snow storm you guys have already had this year. We've only had a few flurries so far. How much did you get?

I'm not complaining mind you! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We've usually had at least one 2 - 4 incher by now.

But snow tires?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I haven't used snow tires in years! I guess the combination of the hills you guys have to negotiate (and I can speak from first hand experience now! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) and the amount of snow you get really requires them.

Did you do the Good Samaritan thing and help pull any of those "stuck" folks out? Nice of you to take them coffee.

Garry -- We got about two feet from the first storm, but just a couple of inches from the second. Wicked ice coming home tonight, though! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Crested the hill into Stowe valley and it was bumper to bumper for a mile, with all sorts of police and rescue vehicles at the bottom of the hill and multiple fender benders and cars in the ditches. BLACK ICE the worst I've ever seen! Thank goodness I had the Subaru again and not the truck! Driving through Moscow on level ground cars were sliding off the road! My trusty old Subaru slipped a couple of times, but once again I was able to navigate around the less fortunate and make my way home without incident!

I won't even attempt to pull someone out with my car as that is clearly beyond its limits. Face it; most cars outweigh my little Subie considerably, and those who leave the road tend to be going pretty fast, i.e., they don't just drift off the road -- they launch themselves off the road! Plus insurance won't cover me if I damage my car in the attempt. And with ice like today they'd just get stuck again the moment I disconnected the tow chain. If someone gets stuck on the dirt portion of our road, however, I have no problem dragging them to freedom with the Kubota.

Stay warm, and stay on the road! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Pete

I just got around to putting my Bridgestone Winter Duelers on my van today. I should have done it a couple of weeks ago when the weather was better.

These aren't studded tires but they are pretty impressive in the snow/ice. They are the truck version of the Blizzak tire. The compound is pretty soft so I can only get two seasons out of them but I figure it is cheaper than a trip to the emergency room. When I ran studded tires I could only get two seasons out of the studs before they were useless and none of the dealers wanted to install new studs for me /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It is amazing how much better winter tires work the all seasons! The traction is so good on sheets of ice that it just doesn't seem like it should be possible.
