Bird my old unit was on it's last legs. I think it was an 11 seer. This unit is a 13. I've checked my power usage and right now this year I will realize a savings of $550 from the last full year of the older unit. So far I am very satisfied with it. I hope it lasts as long as the Bryant unit did.

Yep, 13 seer is what my paperwork says mine is.

Thanks for the input everybody. I will likely go the self install route...may or may not get it online depending on what i find locally.

..........The only difference from my 20 year old carrier is that it ran more often, but my bills has reduced by quite a bit........
One thing to watch is sizing. Most salesmen oversize the furnace and it is on and off all the time. I took the time to do a Manual J calculation and found I needed a much smaller furnace. It runs a lot, but the temperature of the house is very consistent and my bills are low, because they lose efficiency if they heat up and cool down all the time .

The company that I used had two guys who showed up when I called and asked for an estimate. They not only looked to see what KIND of windows we had, but measured every door and window as well as the entire house, went up the steps to the attic to see what insulation was up there, etc. And like you said, they then recommended and priced a smaller unit than I had thought I wanted. And after a few years, I'm convinced they knew what they were doing, and put the right unit in.

I'm impressed. I asked for the salesmen to make the calculation but all they wanted to do was base the furnace (and AC) size on square feet. I down sized the AC, too, and it made a huge difference in reducing the humidity in the house. We're all trees here and a big AC unit only runs for a few minutes without really dehumidifying the air in the house. The little guy chugs away and water streams off the A coil. Much more comfortable.

"Most of us in the heating business will tell you that proper sizing and installation will make for a trouble free furnace that will last for many years. I don't think the brand makes as much difference as the installation does. Most new furnaces are very competitive and use similar or the same internal components. I would not be too concerned about brands being superior to others. I would not spend extra for a Lennox furnace as it does not pencil out."

Proper sizing and attention to details on the installation make more of a difference than the brand name of the equipment...Goodman is a well made furnace...do it yourself a save $

So it seems that simply matching the current furnace is not the way to go? That's all the estimator who gave me the Lennox quote did. He was from the same outfit that put the current one in as well.

That is the lazy man's way of doing it. By going same as old size or bigger, you can never come back and say it doesn't heat during coldest weather, or doesn't cool during hottest summer. But you pay a price, more expensive to buy, less efficient to run, less comfortable. That is not to say you want a unit that is too small, either. In 2001 I installed a new Dayton Furnace in Mom's place... went smaller and so far it has been working well...

I bought it from Grainger since I have an account but noticed Grainger has gone almost all to Goodman furnaces.

During the install I also checked and the ducts for leakage and tightened things up.

At my brothers I put in a Tempstar HVAC... the heating contractor recommended a larger size but I was limited to 30 amps for the A/C compressor so it was the smaller unit... great install and the smaller size has performed very well... we changed out all the windows and doors, added insulation and replaced all the exterior sheetrock to insulate the walls...
