google map updates

my area has new aerial photos. Best I can tell, mine was taken the week or two before labor day. The new picture is a lot clearer, I can see the stains on the shingles, and the plumbing vents.
Wished I had known the were going to take new pictures, I'd have marked my property corners with white markers so they would show up.

If your area hasn't been updated on Google yet, Bing maps has newer data. They are very clear down to lower levels than Google in some areas, not all.

I kind of class myself as a mapaholic....these apps; Google Earth/Maps, Bing, etc...just intrigue me. I have noted lately that updates have been progressing along quite nicely. The area that I live in is still a few years old but I am sure it will be updated eventually.

Something I found just yesterday that Google Maps has to offer is the ability to do a route on your PC in the comfort of your living room and then send it to the navigation device in your vehicle. My Ford truck has the Sync system in it. This system uses your cell phone to obtain routing and various other information via on-demand voice commands. With Google Maps, you just create your route on the PC, then enter your cell phone number to send the travel directions to the Sync server. When you get in your vehicle and give a "directions" voice command, the system will respond saying that there is a route ready for download. Just say YES to allow the download to commence.....and just like magic, you are getting turn-by-turn directions to that new tractor dealership you have been longing to visit. :thumbsup:

Well I am kinda a mapaholic as well. But I havent downloaded any apps like google earth or whatnot.

I just go to google maps and click on satellite view.

So far, mapquest has it hands down for clarity and for being most current.

Bing was just pathetic. I couldn't even distinguish my house.

Google's clarity is ok but not as good as mapquest, and their photos are way more outdate.

I broke ground for my garage/polebarn in late march of 2007. This doesn't show up on google.

Mapquest shows the finished barn and even the concrete walk down to the barn which I completed in august of 2008. The pic may be even newer, but I dont have any other major things that I have done to distinguish.

So the google photo is at least 3 years and 9 months old, maybe older.

The mapquest is only 2 years and 4 months old and posibbally newer than that.

Google's clarity is ok but not as good as mapquest, and their photos are way more outdate.

I don't think any of the services can do the entire country all at once.

Google had our new barn up within a couple of months of building it last summer. I could even see the old low spots I had filled in the pasture with the extra dirt.

It's probably going to be hit and miss as to who has the most up to date photos for any particular spot and they will all be playing leap frog.

Mine was updated also this past summer.

Download the latest Google Earth. Then when viewed click on an icon looking like a clock. It will open a time line with all historical pictures available for your area. New picture of my house is from May 2010 and the history goes back to 1994. The latest pictures are aerial with very good resolution. The older look like from a satellite and have much lower resolution.

The Google maps, Google earth and Mapquest pics of my place are all the exact same pic..

For the aerial photos, they mostly all buy the data from the same people. Bing has the "birds eye" view data set that is unique to them. Google has the "Street View" data. Not sure what sets Mapquest apart.

For pictures of my house:

Mapquest - decent quality overhead, at least 2 years old, medium zoom level. "360-view" is not available in my area. Mapquest also seems to be the slowest to update when panning the maps. Couldn't get "360-view" to load even in an area that indicated availability.

Google - better quality overhead, with high zoom level, at most 1 year old. Google street view is available from one of the roads along my property, but since the house isn't visible from the road, so it is hard to date.

Bing - poor quality image, very low zoom level, at least 4 years old. "Birds-eye" view not directly available. Had to pan in from a few miles down the road, and only south, west and east views available, all at least 4 years old.
