anyone got an idea of cost for a gooseneck hitch installed? I priced it out today with trailer brake controller and harness at $900, I thought that was a bit high.

Without knowing the brand of hitch and controller hard to say. Mine was $450 installed for a folding ball hitch don't remeber what brand. I did not need the contoller as my F250 has a factory one. ( The best controlerr i ever used)

I just installed a B&W turnover ball in my truck. I was 300 shipped, I added the goosenech wiring harness for another 70 and I already had a prodigy brake controller I think I paid around 90 for it. All were easy to install and top of the line.

If it's a quality hitch and good installation job, and a good brake controller installed, that doesn't sound out of line.

About two years ago we paid around $550 installed for a B&W turnover ball, and another couple hundred for a Prodigy brake controller installed. I have never used other brake controllers but I am happy with the Prodigy. Both were installed at the same shop that does only trailer hitches and nothing else; they were recommended by the dealer we bought our truck from. We are towing horses and of course braking is critical with them - not just being able to brake, but doing it smoothly so the horse doesn't get injured and/or your wife doesn't go berserk and injure you because she's worried about her horse. The latter is probably the biggest risk, FWIW. For any other type of trailer the specific model of brake controller might be less critical.

thanks all, Jimi that site's prices are more in line with what i expected... the hitch I was quoted was a drop down/hideaway type, don't know the manufacturer but they wanted $525 just for the hitch.

Ditto except that the Prodigy controller that I already had cost $129 or so now.

The B&W hitch install was really easy too.

The three local shops that I got installed prices from did not carry B&W - or any other similar hitch - thay all carried different variations on the folding ball deal that either uses a much larger hole on the bed or puts a plate on top of the bed. The B&W only requires a single 4" hole (plus the safety chain hookups).

I'm glad to have saved between $350 and $500 by doing it myself. Tomorrow I'm taking the "saved" $ and having a Line-x liner sprayed in.
