Hey gang a little background for you:
Bought a Case 480E backhoe ,13,000lbs full of fuel. I then sold my 14K corn pro 20+5 GN trailer since I couldnt haul the backhoe on it. I stumbled on a 40' Load max 21K gooseneck that is way too long and I'm selling for a profit. I then came across a 77 GMC dump truck 28,000 gvwr with hydraulic brakes for a great price. My pickup 05 3500 SRW cummins 4x4.

ISSUE: do I buy another goosneck trailer or buy a tag trailer for the dump truck. The Gooseneck would be a new 25+5 tandem dual GN (corn pro or big tex) and the tag trailer would be a (used) Econoline, talbert, or Interstate all electric brake trailers. So I could save a couple grand give or take depending on what I find and its condition.

The gooseneck would be nice to haul behind the pickup every now and then but hauling the backhoe isnt that much fun on the transmission. But would come in use for hauling misc items.

The tag trailer would only be hauled behind the dump truck and on rare occasion behind the pickup for whatever reason.

Which would you choose and your opinions? I wont be hauling every day maybe once a week give or take.

Thanks!!

A Tag trailer with a pintle hitch should be fine behind the dump truck, but trying to use that same trailer behind the pickup will be a major problem. Even a weight distribution hitch, I believe most likely won't be rated to haul a trailer and the CASE behind your pickup.

Dump truck is better able to handle a big load.
I'd use it to pull a tag trailer with.

Then you can change pickups and not be affected by whatever you are going to pull.

Besides -- you probably use the backhoe with the dump truck often anyhow.

I didnt mean pull the backhoe on the tag behind the pickup. I have a Ford 861 that is a little much for my car hauler so that would go on the tag behind the pickup for example.

before I get bashed I have a correct license to pull the trailer and the dump truck photo was taken while I was removing the previous owners decals. New ones will go on in a week.

IC Smoke, that dump looks like it's in good condition. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you get it for?

Is the dump a gasser or diesel? I know either will pull the backhoe, but I think the gasser would be struggling.

I'd have to go with the GN 25+5, just for the increased versatility. I have a LoadMax 25+5 tandem dually and love it. The tag would be limited and not sure it would tow so well behind the PU.

Good luck!

Probably won't like the tag behind the pickup, they are heavy and tongue heavy. They are cheap and plentiful around here at least though.

I would go with the tag trailer in a heat beat. I personally do not like GN for many reasons. Get one long enough and you can easily use it with the pickup by being able to balance the load properly.

Thanks for the input guys!!

77 ce6500 427 gasser 5 speed split rear end. I'm the 3rd owner the previous owner bought it off a propane company (old propane truck) in 88 at 111K then they installed a new dump bed, doors, hood, grille and had it repainted to match the rest of the fleet. I bought it with 153K miles always stored inside and have every service record and receipt log since 88. Paid $3500 for it :D

Im still on the fence. I hardly used my 20+5 14K corn pro GN when I had it but it did come in handy at times.... I would mainly be hauling the backhoe 12 miles away to a second farm. Right now I have one of the guys drive it down the road which is a little tough on the tires

You can buy lots of tires for the cost of a suitable trailer.
