Gopher Killer Question

Ditto the Juicy Fruit gum method. It does work. It works better if you don't handle the gum though. They can smell humans. Also, you need to find an active burrow. They'll plug a line behind them after digging a vent hole. Find the vent hole and you got 'em. The gum takes a couple of days to work.

   / Gopher Killer Question #14
I have so many moles that it is painful to drive over the pasture, with 40 acres, this has become depressing. Due to the number of gophers or moles, I have given up on all of the manual methods described in this thread. As a new farmer, I have asked several of the neighbors about this and they all have used a tool that looks like a sub soiler with a seed planter. It lays down a track with poison grain that the gopher or mole follows and after it eats enough, then they die. These cost about $1000 plus the grain. I have not quite bought one yet, but any day now. Any comments on this method?

Several years ago at Forrest City, Ark. a man was told to use gas and pour into the hole the vapors would remove Oxygen and kill moles. So he did and it being summer time waited about and hour and then decided to light the vapor. The resulting explosion blew off the carport and lifted up the concrete drive. Never heard how the moles did.

Morning capi75rs,

What my wife does is we go to a fresh mound, take a stick and find the hole, then spread down the dirt, she then takes a plastic spoon on a wood dowel rod and puts two half's of a stick of juicy fruit gum (it's the only one they like) down the hole, she then takes some grass cuttings and puts over the hold then lightly put dirt back over the hole.

The moles eat the gum and they can't digest it so it kills them. She killed more moles with that approach than we did with guns. Her score for last year was 15 moles. We probably shot about 50 ground squirrels last year.

How interesting, I was telling my wife this story and she said " Oh Yes my grandpartents use to do this" I must give this a try, At $0.25 a pack, it is hard not to at least try it. Thanks for the insite.

So, have any of you seen a mole that has died due to eating juicy fruit gum?

Have any of you seen a mole that has died due to eating poison grain?

I ask in all seriousness as I have killed several hundred moles on our one acre property in the last 5-6 years by trapping.

Nop, I can't say that I have. I also have not tried the poison. My problem is that I have a 5 and 7 yr old who love to play outside. Traps and poison are not an option for me at this time. The grub killer soaks into the ground and in a day or two after putting it on it is safe for people and pets to walk around. I also have 3 dogs and I've herd that if they eat a mole that has been poisoned that it could make them sick (don't know for sure if that is the truth but not willing to chance it) What I'm worried about is my kids digging up the gum after I try this tactic :D.
