I went to cut off a dead limb and half the tree fell down.
This was an apple tree with the diameter of an oil drum, but only the outer quarter inch is sound. The gophers ate the rest - note the earth inside the tree and the dead, punky white wood that was holding it together.
The remaining living half produces more apples than a new tree so I'll leave it until the whole thing falls down.
This is (was) a Gravenstein, probably one of the original ones from about 1910.
